Memories up in the loft

 A collaborative post 

When we first moved into our home over fifteen years ago, we didn’t have much at all. We bought second hand furniture from a friend and filled our kitchen with our university-bought small appliances. Our belongings from our pre-university years that we had been given from our parents homes were stored up in the loft for safe keeping and we vowed to sort through it all when we had a bit more time. Years later as our family has grown, we have stored more and more up in the loft. It is time to sort through the loft and the memories we stored up there. 

Making way for our family 

After we got married, we wanted to enjoy some time for ourselves. We wanted to enjoy being a couple and we enjoyed days out and holidays together. We both enjoyed various hobbies; crafting was something I enjoyed and was given a second-hand sewing machine which I loved to use. Quilts and cushions were sewn and had various accessories such as bunting and tote bags. I was immensely proud of myself for learning a new skill and felt pride in the pieces I made. But once our children were born, we made space for their belongings, my sewing things packed away to make way for baby chairs and a cotbed, my husband’s cricket and football gear made way for boxes of toy cars and nappies, packed away up in the loft for future use. 

Time to move on 

This summer it’s time to sort through the memories in the loft and we plan to make the space accessible for the whole family. It’s a low budget plan but we hope to re-board the floor, install INUI LED lighting into the beams and build storage into the eaves. We’ve been looking at installing a new set of stairs for the loft to make it more accessible and who knows, I might even be able to go up there instead of giving orders from down below. We’re going to be ruthless and recycle what we can, sell on things that still hold on some value and part ways with things that have lay dormant up there gathering dust for years. 

Our loft holds a lot of memories for us but is also filled with stuff that we no longer need. It’s definitely time to re-evaluate what is up there and make way for a more practical space. A space for the boys can play board games, throw darts and house their ever-increasing toy car collection.
