If you’re working from home, getting your housework done might be the last of your priorities. There’s always something other than housework to do so it’s easy for the chores to slip down the to do list. As a work from home Mum, I’ve been working from home for the last three years and have got myself into a little routine of working, housework and keeping on top of all the life admin. Here’s five ways in which I work to stay on top of the housework.

Do your washing little and often

Instead of keeping all the washing to do at the weekend, I try to keep on top of the washing pile by doing little and often loads. One day I’ll wash all our bedding, the next day I’ll wash our towels, maybe whites on one day and the rest of the washing pile another day. Doing it little and often means I can get through the washing pile and redistribute it around the house when it’s dry. No-one likes a huge pile of washing to do at the weekend!

Organise your waste

I know that our household and recycling bins are collected on a Monday morning so every Sunday evening, I run around the house emptying the bins ahead of collection the following day. In our kitchen, we have our usual household kitchen bin which is the perfect size for all our waste. I’ll empty our kitchen bin when it reaches the top usually, every three to four days. Next to it we have a small recycling bin which we store recyclables throughout the day. We recycle as much as we can including envelopes, plastic milk bottles, cardboard boxes and food cans. Of an evening, I’ll transfer the recyclable waste into our recycle bin outside so we don’t have overflowing waste.

Tidy up before bed

Another way I’ve been able to stay on top of the housework is to make sure the house is tidy before we go to bed. This will mean making sure there are no plates or cups left around the house. The dishwasher will get loaded and put on to run through the night so we have clean plates, bowls and utensils to use in the morning. Doing a speed clean of the living space downstairs makes mornings a lot less stressful. No-one likes to come down in the morning to a messy house.

A tidy house is a tidy mind

Be house proud

I love making my house look clean and tidy. I cannot work effectively if I know there is a mess in the same room as me. I just can’t rest, as I say above ‘a tidy house is a tidy mind‘. I love to make sure everything has a home and looks in place. Our kitchen is one of the rooms I like to keep tidy. We have a stylish teal green kitchen bin which is accessible for the whole family. Even the toddler can walk over and use the kitchen bin to keep on top of the household waste. It’s a gorgeous colour and looks very smart in our kitchen. It helps make the overall look of the kitchen work and allows me to keep the rest of the room as clean as possible.

Tackle life admin early on

Life admin can be very tiresome so I like to tackle it early each month after payday. This lets me organise our finances, book appointments and pay the bills for the month ahead knowing that the rest of the month is clear to not worry about the household bills. It’s a routine I’ve got myself into and it really helps to declutter my brain’s to-do list.

What tips do you have for staying on top of the housework when you’re working from home?
