Find a theme

Themed dinner parties can be very fun. On top of finding a theme for the food and possibly even getting guests to dress up, you can look into ways of matching your table decorations to the theme. Planning a Scottish Burns’ Night meal? Why not add some tartan and some posies to the table decorations? Planning a beach-themed dinner party? Why not add some ocean blue tones and possibly even decorate the table with some seashells?

Splash out on some fancy dinnerware

Give your guests the feeling of eating out at a restaurant by investing in some fancy dinnerware. This could include some china plates, crystal glasses or even some silver cutlery. You can also look into sophisticated ways of serving foods and drinks. Carafes and bottle holders could be great ways of serving cocktails or wine. When it comes to serving food, consider looking into stylish serving bowls or even adding cloches to plates if you want to be extra fancy!

Go completely mismatched

You don’t have to use matching sets of glassware. If your cupboards are full of novelty cups and glasses, why not give everyone a different glass? The wackier the better – everyone will be comparing implements and it will make for some humorous conversation. You can do the same with plates and cutlery.

Light some candles

Candles can help to offer an ambient glow that can make the atmosphere more relaxing. Tall pillar candles are best placed in the middle of the table where they’re less likely to be hit by people’s arms – you could even create a circle in the middle of the same made of candles of different heights. Flat candles can be placed nearer the corners, but you should still try to keep them far enough from diners that they don’t accidentally brush them with their sleeve (you could also put the candles in glass cups to prevent this).

Add some flowers and plants

Flowers and plants can literally bring life to the table. Bouquets of flowers can create an explosion of colour, but be careful of going too big as it could prevent diners from talking to each other from across the table. You can also use garlands of flowers, or garlands of leaves such as holly or eucalyptus. Artificial flowers and plants could be more budget-friendly as you can keep reusing them.

Learn some napkin origami

When it comes to putting napkins on the table, consider folding them into creative shapes like swans or flowers. This post details a few different napkin folding ideas that could be worth learning. It’s an extra way to make the table more playful.

Create some name cards

If you want your guests to sit in certain places, why not create some name cards? These could be handwritten or printed if you want to go the extra mile. You could even make it a game and give everyone nicknames or character names so that they have to work out where their place is.
