They say when you start to redecorate it’s a never ending job, and they’re so right! We are currently in the process of having a much needed overhaul in our two bedrooms. This has led us to want to redecorate the hall, stairs and landing and now of course, at the bottom of the stairs is our main living room (also play room and dining room) which is also desperate for a new lick of paint and some new flooring.

Last year we had to replace our boiler and moved it from the boys bedroom down into the kitchen. The pipework had to reconfigured and we now have a little bit of pipe that needs boxing in and disguising. Since we have the paint and the tools to complete the renovation, we have been looking at ways we can inexpensively redecorate the room to bring it into 2020 and match it with the new look upstairs!

Living room makeover

Bring in the light

One of the first things we are going to do is paint the room a really bright white. The room suffers with a lack of light in the afternoon as the sun moves round and we need to artificially brighten the room up. We intend to have our chimney breast as a feature wall with a contrasting dark teal or grey coloured paint. We have a mixture of white wood and oak in the living room so think these will work well.

Upgrade the flooring

Secondly, we need to upgrade the carpet to laminate flooring. Our living room is a high traffic room which connects the kitchen to the hallway and so it is in constant use. We haven’t had the flooring replaced in this room for many years and I dread to think of all the stains that may be hiding.

Laminate flooring is such a practical choice when children are around. They are always dropping food, spilling drinks, we use the living room for crafts and art projects. We spend the majority of our awake time in this room as it’s so versatile so additionally the floor needs to work for us too! I love the thought of being able to wipe up a drinks spillage so easily without having to worry about soaking up the excess and cleaning the stain. Laminate gives us the flexibility to live a busy lifestyle knowing that any mess can be instantly cleaned up.

I love the choice of laminate flooring too with so many different colours and finishes. We really like a darker floor and would be keen to install oak laminate with the click system profile. They look really handy and really easy to put together. Remind me I said that in weeks to come when I’m struggling with it!

Accessories will change the look of the room

We don’t plan to change many of the accessories in the living room as they work for us. We had a new sofa at the start of the year which we love so we wouldn’t be changing that so soon. I love how you can change the look of the room with different coloured accessories; cushions, lampshades and rugs. Our favourite new addition to our living room is a beautiful family photo printed on a canvas. Once we’ve redecorated the living room, we’ll be done in here for a few years. It’s all coming together nicely.
