Natural light is an indispensable asset for any interior designer – whether you’re a homeowner looking to make the right choices, or a professional looking to build a lasting skill set. But why is this, and how can we leverage natural light in our homes? Let’s take a look at what matters.
The Benefits of Natural Light in Contemporary Homes
When you’re surrounded by natural light, you tend to feel better about the world. You might have an easier time focusing on the work in front of you, or unwinding at the end of a busy day. This is particularly important during winter, when natural light is scarcer.
It’s for this reason that so many modern designs feature larger windows – or even walls that are entirely consumed by glass. When we have the option of bringing lots of natural light into a space, we tend to avail ourselves of it.
Venetian Blinds; A Versatile Solution for Light Control
Of course, simply installing a large window isn’t enough. We also need to be able to control the amount of light coming into the space. In this respect, Venetian blinds offer the greatest amount of flexibility. Unlike curtains, they can be collapsed into a very small space. They also offer plenty of control, allowing you to preserve your privacy while still allowing sunlight to enter the space from above.
Practical Tips for Maximising Natural Light
Getting the most of natural light tends to mean thinking about reflections. Pale surfaces reflect more light (which is why they appear pale). White surfaces are the most reflective of all. Remember that mirrors are just as reflective, but they’re also smooth enough to reflect a cohesive image straight back at the viewer.
What’s important is that you avoid blocking the spread of light by placing furniture in the middle of a space. Look for shadows, and eliminate them. Check the space at various times of day, and keep things as flexible as possible.
Creating Ambience with Layered Window Treatments
If you’re relying on just a single set of window treatments, then you might leave yourself with a flawed solution. For example, blinds might offer the same level of light-exclusion as blackout curtains. The solution, more often than not, comes from a combination of two different kinds of window dressing.
You might change things up as the weather gets colder, and you find yourself needing better thermal performance. Remember also that you’ll need to maintain and clean your windows as the year progresses. Make sure that you’ve given yourself a chance to do this.
Transform Your Space with Thoughtful Light Design
A brighter home tends to be a more attractive and inviting one. But you don’t need to smash walls down, or install new skylights, to enjoy the benefits, here. A few small changes might allow you to enjoy lasting benefits. You might arrive at a bright, homely interior in a sequence of small steps!
