Working virtually has become the new normal, with 79% of businesses planning to continue virtual working strategies post-COVID. And why not? Working from home offers several advantages, including improved work flexibility and even productivity – but it’s not without its challenges. Many virtual workers have learned from experience that it’s not all rosy, as several people continue to struggle with this shift. And this can affect productivity. So, whether you’re thinking about starting a business from home or working virtually from home for the first time, here are some challenges you can expect and how you can fix them.

Resolving technical challenges on your own

If you used to work for a company in a traditional office setting, the chances are your employer took care of all your technical issues through a dedicated IT staff. But at home, you’ll have to resolve most (if not all) of your technical issues on your own – and there are significant technical challenges to overcome.

There are two main ways to get around this problem. First, always ensure that your computer is up-to-date with the latest tools and software updates. You may also benefit from utilising the services of a cloud hosting company for reliable data storage to keep your data safe and secure. That alone can solve a majority of performance issues. Second, do your best to stay in touch with your work’s IT department when possible, as they can help you resolve unique challenges remotely.

If that isn’t an option, you can always try going online for solutions. For instance, if you’re a Mac user-facing Safari problems, you can quickly find simple solutions online.

Isolation

Of course, many workers don’t appreciate their supervisors breathing down their necks or colleagues meddling with their computers. But virtual working can take away physical employee interaction. Humans are naturally social beings, and isolation can affect a person’s mental wellbeing and even their work performance. The best fix here is to use group communication tools and social media platforms to keep in touch. Traditional phone calls are also very important. They might not give you physical contact, but they sure will help you maintain a social connection.

Managing your own time and schedule

While many virtual workers appreciate the flexibility it offers, there’s always the problem of poor time management and work scheduling. The chance to manage your work schedule without those annoying 5 am alarms and people telling you what time to get to work or go for breaks sounds appealing, but you need to get it right. It is easy to misjudge how much time you have when working from home. And the safest way to avoid this problem is to stick to the concept of “normal business or working hours” as much as possible. Setting hours dedicated to work will help you distinguish work time and other pursuits.

Dealing with distractions

If you’re working from home, then you can expect distraction to abound from your family members, children, phone, TV, name them. But it’s one thing having distractions at home and another thing letting them get to you. Do your best to keep any form of distraction away from your workstation. You can also create and stick to a strict schedule of tasks as a way of keeping you on track.
