As a way of making extra cash on top of existing income, AirBnB hosting really came into its own in the latter half of the 2010s. Offering holiday makers the chance to stay in a destination without shelling out huge fees for hotels has become a very lucrative thing to do with any spare room you might have. With that said, 2020 was naturally a tough year for anyone who relied on income from people travelling, and it became virtually impossible to open your house to anyone who didn’t live there permanently.
At present, the vast majority of the restrictions people faced in 2020 have been shelved – probably permanently – and the opportunity for travellers has been restored. So with the events of the last year taken into account, and looking at everything else, is it a good time to look into becoming an AirBnB host?
It’s a good idea to get creative
The vast bulk of the Covid protocols may have gone away, but the virus itself hasn’t, and as much as you may insist on a negative test for new arrivals and guarantee your own virus-free status, there’s always going to be a question. It’s a good idea to have a contact-free mode of checking in so that renters aren’t immediately apprehensive. If you’ve spent a portion of lockdown furnishing the ultimate loft room space with rentals in mind, you’ll hopefully have created a separate entryway that serves the loft. A video doorbell is also a good idea, as it can be monitored from anywhere and allows you to greet renters remotely.
Stay abreast of the latest updates
If you have visitors arriving from abroad, then the chances are that they have been following the latest news anyway. However, as their host it is beneficial that you be able to give them insight on what is allowed and what isn’t – both on your premises and more generally. AirBnB have their own regulations on what protocols to follow, so keep abreast of those when contacting potential renters. It’s important to know how best to clean the rental space between visitors, and to keep a record of when it is cleaned. For your own purposes, knowing anything there is to know about potential new variants is also wise.
You can still speak to and meet renters
Among the restrictions that have been removed this year, the need for households to avoid mixing has ended, as has the insistence on social distancing. So when it comes to meeting renters in person, you’re free to do that – as much or as little as you (or the renter) would prefer. It’s advisable to do this while wearing a mask, at least initially, and to request that new arrivals are also masked particularly when indoors. However, meeting in person can very much enhance the experience for renter and host alike, so it is worthwhile to offer this in the listing. You are the best person to know where to go and how to get there in your town, from your property, so you’re a beneficial resource in your own right!
