Autumn is almost certainly making it’s mark here in the UK with the wind, rain and cooler days leaving us reaching for our warmer clothes. After a disruptive summer, you might be considering making the most of the sunshine elsewhere. With travel restrictions in place for many countries, holiday seekers will be pleased to see that popular holiday destinations such as the Greek Islands are still on the travel corridor list making them the perfect place for a last-minute getaway this Autumn.
Where to visit in Greece
Mainland Greece and some of it’s beautiful islands are still very much open for business. Hotels are much quieter than usual due to the ongoing pandemic but this could be seen as an advantage for some plus there are some fantastic affordable holiday packages. The Greek people are some of the most welcoming in the world and you would always be welcome in their resorts.
Corfu
Corfu is an island on the north west coast of the Greek mainland and is a popular island in the Ionian Sea. It’s not just the beautiful beaches that entice the tourists here, the island has a full Mediterranean history to discover. The Roman village of Kassiopi is a significant historical site to explore and is popular with those interested in archaeology. The site is well preserved and is a fantastic place to visit to dive into the history of the island. Corfu Town is a place to pop on the ‘must visit’ list. With it’s imposing fortresses of venetian origin, the Palace of St Michael and St George and over 40 Orthodox churches, there’s lots to see and discover.
Rhodes
Rhodes is the furthest east of the Greek islands in the Mediterranean with Turkey to the north and Crete to the south west. Rhodes is a stunning island and it’s popular tourist resorts include Ixia, Pefkos, Lindos and Faliraki. The night clubs and bars in Faliraki help to make this town a sought after holiday destination with live entertainment and popular clubs to dance the night away.
Kefalonia
An island situated to the west of mainland Greece, Kefalonia is well known for it’s breathtakingly beautiful rugged mountainous coastline. It’s coves and sandy beaches are mostly only accessible on foot which deters day trip tourists in favour of more accessible coastal areas. The villages on Kefalonia are uniquely traditional where the food is locally sourced and on offer in restaurants and cafes. Kefalonia is also well known for its incredible cave in the Lake Melissani which boasts spectacular scenery through its roof and a once-in-a-lifetime experience boat trips.
If you’re looking to travel this autumn winter there are some gems to discover out there and you would always have a wonderful time in the Greek Islands.
