Begin with a New Table Cover

The focal point of any dining room is the table, and you may not be ready to change out your table, but you can change things up. The simplest change is to put a new cover on it, preferably something with a whole new color scheme from what you had before so that it really stands out. Look at a few different options and pay attention to how long the cover is so that you get one that’s a good fit. Ideally, you want a cover that hangs over the edges of the table but doesn’t fall into anyone’s lap while they are eating. You can pick up a tablecloth in many colours, shapes and sizes. Round table cloths help dress the table so it’s serves a purpose and is ready to be dressed with cutlery and tableware.

Add a Gallery Wall

The dining room can be a great place to have your photos take the spotlight. By adding a few shelves to one of the walls, you can have a space that showcases tons of different photographs. Creating a gallery wall is tons of fun and requires you to think about how the pictures will look grouped together and in the frames. Consider changing out some frames for a better sense of unity and play around with size pairing on the pictures and intermingling some black and white shots in with colors pics.

Add a Carpet

We often think of our dining rooms as a space for a table and little else. If you look at the room as a design challenge, you can start to see the possibilities, though. One place to make a big change is the flooring, which can be majorly altered with the addition of a carpet. Now, adding carpet to a room is a big decision. You have to think about how it matches the other colors and if it ties the room together. Also, if you have kids in the home, you may want a carpet that is easy to clean after they drop their food on the floor.

With a carpet under your dining room table, it may be tough to keep things clean at times. If the dirt and grime gets too out of hand, call in expert housecleaners to tidy things up for you.

Incorporate More Furniture

If your dining room has the space for it, why not add in some extra pieces of furniture from a dining room collection for décor and functionality? A couch up against the wall can make for more casual seating, and your dining guests can transition from the table to the couch after meals. You can add end tables with lamps or plants on them for an interesting look. In dining rooms that have lots of extra space, try adding a second, smaller table for children.

Many dining rooms have plenty of leftover space that isn’t being utilized. Look for opportunities to add furniture you will actually use or that will enhance the room in some way.

Create a Softer Space

If you want to radically change things up in the dining room and are not working with a tight budget, consider giving the room a new skylight or adding some windows. Bringing in natural lighting like this can dramatically shift the mood of the room and make it feel warmer and more welcoming.

You can make the room feel much softer by repainting everything in neutral or muted tones as well, getting rid of bold, loud colors. A brightly colored dining room may look great at first, but it can be tough to relax in that kind of space, so muted tones are often a better choice. Using earthy or gray tones is a great way to create a relaxing, soft atmosphere in the space.

Change with the Seasons

Does your dining room look the same all year long? It doesn’t have to, and you can switch out the décor as the seasons change to keep the room looking fresh and or give yourself a fun decorating project every so often.

Consider keeping a few elements the same with every decorating cycle, like a few statement pieces that help tie everything together. And then switch out the tablecloth, candles, settings, placemats, and even the pictures on the walls to dramatically change the look of your dining room as the seasons shift. Incorporating fall colors or a frosty winter theme can be a great way to keep the dining room feeling fresh and exciting all year long.

Use Mirrors to Catch the Eye

Incorporating mirrors into your décor adds a whole new layer into the look of a space like the dining room. A few large mirrors will extend the feel of the space, making it appear much larger and deeper. Using a number of small framed mirrors will create a gallery look without the need for pictures. The frames become a big part of this décor idea, so choose them carefully. You can decorate an entire wall with small mirrors for this design motif or spread them across multiple walls.

Add Lots of Colour That Pops

Bold and diverse colors can create a sense of movement and spontaneity to a room. If you incorporate a number of brightly colored pieces into your dining room, you will make it come alive. Use a variety of colors to continuously catch your eyes as they move across the room, and you will have a space that you never get tired of looking at.

Dining rooms do not need to be dull and lifeless, occupied only by a single table and a few simple pieces of decoration. You can change up the look of the room with some carefully chosen modifications, drawing inspiration from my list.
