As the spring lockdown took hold and the weather started warming up, people started turning to their gardens while furloughed. 2020 was the year to turn the back garden into the luxurious space you always dreamed it would be or even something simpler like grow your own fruit and veg. People were bored without jobs to go to and spent their time constructively and creatively with less money on furloughed pay and shortages of in demand items. Most people now have a much better garden than they did in 2019 and each garden is different.

Sheds

Now that autumn is here and the lockdown continues to ease, you’ll want to keep all those gardening tools and expensive or hand-constructed garden furniture safe for next year. Every garden needs a shed. Aston Sheds UK has links to the best sheds in the UK to suit every garden storage need from tiny garden boxes to large elaborate sheds.

Grow Your Own

Still with earlier food storages in mind from the combination of panic buyers and supermarkets lacking large stockrooms, people tried their hands at growing their own food. Some people planted directly in the soil, others planted in containers. Some even built their own containers.

Whether it was a little container herd garden or a large vegetable patch that made the back garden look like an allotment, growing your own really took off this year.

It isn’t too late to establish a vegetable garden. Some plants need to be planted in autumn and winter, much like spring bulbs. With returning to work, it is time to consider low-maintenance fruit and vegetables.

Wild Flowers

Wild flowers are the lazy person’s choice and require no maintenance. Concrete slabs need hours spent bent over digging out weeds followed by spraying toxic weed killer into the cracks. Wild flowers are popping up everywhere.

Key workers didn’t have the luxury of time and required somewhere to relax after a busy and stressful shift.

Wild flowers are environmentally friendly. They attract bees and butterflies, whether they’ve been carefully cultivated in a specific area or the seeds have been scattered with a “hope for the best” attitude. They add drainage too.

Everything Zen

With the enforced time off work and being kept away from friends and family and the general bustle of modern life, people were confronted with themselves with distractions harder to come across. Mental health waiting lists are impossibly long in a virus-stretched health service and a lot of people trying to access them.

People confronted their stresses and took to carving tranquillity in the garden. Whether this was potted lavender next to a comfy lawn chair or a full-blown meditation retreat next to a water feature, people cared for their mental health in the garden.

2020 saw enforced solitude and a burst of creativity. People took their gardens to relieve the stress of living through a global pandemic. As lockdown lifts, there is no reason not to maintain the garden of your dreams.
