When that first stretch of warmer weather hits, it just makes me want to throw open the back door, step outside with a cuppa, and properly see the garden again. After months of being a bit neglected, it always feels like a fresh start.

Getting the garden ready for summer isn’t about perfection for me,  it’s about creating a space that feels calm, inviting, and somewhere we actually want to spend time as a family. Over the years, I’ve found a few simple things that make a huge difference without feeling overwhelming. Here are my go-to tips for bringing the garden back to life…

Start With a Proper Clear-Up

Before I even think about planting or styling anything, I tackle the mess that winter leaves behind. Fallen branches, tired plant pots, and all those random bits that seem to gather out of nowhere, they all go.

One thing I always make sure to do is pick up any leaves and debris, especially around drains. It’s such a small job, but blocked drains can cause real issues when we get those heavy summer downpours. A quick sweep now saves a lot of hassle later. If you find that you have blocked drains, it’s always worth investigating further with a CCTV Drainage Survey. Never leave a blockage in the hope it will sort itself out as this will end in an expensive challenge!

Refresh the Lawn (Without Overthinking It)

I used to think lawn care had to be complicated, but honestly, a simple refresh goes a long way. The first cut of the season always feels so satisfying, instant progress!

If the grass is looking a bit tired, I’ll give it a light feed and rake through any patchy areas. Nothing fancy, just enough to bring it back to life so it’s soft underfoot for those barefoot summer days.

Add Easy Colour With Plants and Pots

I love adding colour, but I’ve definitely learned to keep things low-maintenance. A few well-placed pots filled with bright flowers can completely transform the space without needing constant attention.

I usually go for a mix of something leafy and something that flowers, it gives that full, lush look without trying too hard. And if you’re short on time, pre-planted pots are an absolute win.

Create a Space You Actually Want to Sit In

This is the bit I enjoy the most, making the garden feel like an extension of the home. It doesn’t have to be a full makeover. Even just wiping down the furniture, adding a couple of cushions, or bringing out a throw can make it feel cosy and inviting. I always think: would I sit here with a drink in the evening? If the answer’s no, it just needs a few tweaks.

Don’t Forget the Little Jobs

It’s so easy to focus on the bigger changes and forget the small things, but they really do make a difference. Cleaning the patio, checking fences for any damage, and giving pathways a quick tidy-up all help the garden feel looked after. These are the jobs I tend to put off, but once they’re done, everything feels instantly brighter.

For me, getting the garden ready for summer isn’t about creating a show home, it’s about making a space that works for us. Somewhere the kids can play, where we can relax, and where I can sit with a cup of tea and feel like everything’s just right (even if it’s not perfect). A little effort now really does set the tone for the months ahead, and honestly, there’s nothing better than enjoying those long summer evenings in a space you’ve brought back to life yourself.

If you’re starting your garden prep, I’d love to know, are you a quick tidy-up person, or do you go all in with a full makeover?
