Our boys space themed bedroom makeover

With two growing children and a small two bedroom terrace, we have to make the most of the space available. I was desperate to decorate our bedroom again and change the carpet but my priorities were with with our youngest son moving from a cotbed to a single bed. So we decided to do something quite drastic. We decided to switch bedrooms with them. They would share our bigger bedroom and we would take theirs. Both bedrooms needed new carpets, redecorating and new furniture to accommodate the move so we started planning. This is how our boys space themed bedroom has come together.

Space themed bedroom for our ‘wannabe’ astronauts

For as long as I can remember, Olly has always been fascinated with the concept of space. He loves looking up into the night sky for planets, stars and space rockets. Most recently, we have loved watching American astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley complete their Space X Dragon mission to the ISS.

We knew a space themed bedroom would work perfectly for our boys. Thankfully, there’s plenty of space themed interiors in the shops and online. We had bought quite a few pieces over the last year so didn’t really need to buy much more as side from beds, carpet and paint!

Crushing on Sapphire Salute!

We decided to keep the walls and floor quite neutral which would allow us to change the theme in their room as they get older. In the future we may decide on wallpaper but for now we kept the walls plain. We went for a slate grey carpet and brilliant white walls with the feature wall in a beautiful blue colour, Dulux Sapphire Salute. The blue feature wall was so beautiful we decided to have it in our new bedroom too! Huge thanks to my Sister for helping us redecorate the room.

New beds

Changing bedrooms has given us the opportunity to move Freddie from his cotbed to a single bed. He had outgrown his cotbed although he was still sleeping wonderfully in it, it was time to move him into a single bed. We bought two Dorset Single Beds in white from Noa and Nani as we wanted them both to have a single bed each. I love the shaker style beds, they look brilliant and match the other white wooden wardrobes and other furniture in their bedroom.

Lots of storage needed

We needed a lot of storage for the boys clothing, shared toys and books. We already had a 2 x 4 Ikea Kallax unit in their bedroom with red star print and blue star print storage boxes from Avon (red) and GLTC (blue). Again we bought these when we saw them last year. They are brilliant for hiding away all their toys. For in-between their beds, we bought another 2 x 1 Ikea Kallax unit. They share the table lamp which we bought from Next. Their wardrobes (Stuva/Fritids) were bought from Ikea earlier in the year. My Dad fixed them to the wall so they are safe for the boys to play around.

Bedding, curtains and other finishing touches

We bought the curtains from GLTC (Great Little Trading Company) in the sale last year and thankfully they were still in stock over the summer. I waited for a sale and got a discount on them. They’re black out curtains which is perfect for the children as the front bedroom gets much more sunlight in the early hours than the back bedroom. The white blinds are from Make My Blinds which were gifted from a previous collaboration.

The boys bedding matches perfectly and is available from Dunelm. Their mustard yellow star cushions were from Morrisons bought last year.

Other finishing touches in the room so far have been the space bunting which I made from a kit bought from The Banner Boutique on Etsy. I also bought some fantastic space themed prints from House of Jack. I bought two personalised prints with the boys names on and then a couple of the other prints for a different wall. They look so good, we’re so pleased with them.

My very talented Mum has made us a couple of square cushions for the z-bed. She also made us some triangular bunting and star bunting from the spare curtain we haven’t used. She also made us three tiebacks for the curtains (yet to be put up).

What the boys think

We are so pleased with how the space themed bedroom has come together. It is full of stars but so is the sky! The boys have absolutely loved their new bedroom and Freddie really loves the space he has to play with his big brother. They can get all their toys out and play freely. It’s so nice for them to have a space to play in upstairs. Olly thinks his bedroom is amazing and he’s so pleased with it. He especially loves that he’s now got a TV in his room and can watch the TV in bed in a morning.

We’re hoping the bedroom will last the boys a good few years. It’s young enough for a growing toddler and grown up enough for a junior, I think we’ve got the balance just right.
