As the weather gets warmer and the days get longer, most of us can’t wait to spend as much time as possible outdoors. From inviting friends over for a barbeque to reading your book as you lounge in the sun, our gardens are about to become our favourite places, but they need to look the part.

This can be a daunting task, especially if you don’t consider yourself to have a green thumb. Luckily, this guide sets out everything you need to know about getting your garden ready for summer.

Gardening

Getting the basic gardening maintenance out of the way will lay the foundation for you to make more exciting changes to your space. Give your borders a tidy-up by mowing the lawn, removing dead leaves and lurking winter weeds. This will make room for the flowers or greenery to come and instantly restore some order to your garden. For your remaining plant life, make sure you give them a healthy helping of fertiliser and consistently water them to keep them blooming for the months ahead.

Decorations

Including décor in your garden design is a great way to express your unique personality and add some depth. As the days stretch longer, make the most of your evenings with some strategically placed solar garden lights. They’re a cost-effective and eco-friendly way to illuminate your patio or path, creating a magical ambience for those pleasant summer nights.

Other personal touches that can make all the difference include bird feeders, windchimes, and quirky garden ornaments. You can also get the children involved in the decorating by having them place windmills or hang bunting.

Furniture

Garden furniture is a must in the summer; after all, you need somewhere to relax and soak up the sun. Consider adding a hammock for afternoon naps, a table and chair set for alfresco dining, or a comfy sofa for entertaining friends and family. Dig out your garden cushions and throws to keep your guests warm well into the evenings.

If you stored away your furniture from last year, it likely needs some TLC before you use it again. Give your barbeque a deep clean, wipe down your chairs and table surfaces and freshen up your cushion covers and blankets by giving them a quick wash.

Repainting and Refreshing

Since your garden furnishings are constantly exposed to the elements, they may have become dull or chipped during the winter months. You will be surprised at how far a fresh coat of paint and a spring clean can go.

Repainting your fences and shed with a cheerful, summer colour can really refresh your space, while pressure washing your patio can instantly make it more inviting.
