Our home office plans

After YEARS of having a makeshift desk in the corner of a room, with paperwork piled high on the dining room table and stationery, blog samples and props stacked in ‘spare’ places around our house, we are finally getting a home office!

Our current outhouse backs onto the kitchen and is just a shell of a room. It was a room we have stored rubbish in for years; broken chairs, a large chest freezer full of unidentifiable frozen foods, odd pots of paint, you name it, it was in there. We finally had cleared it out thanks to the Clearabee team earlier in the year and that set the cogs working about how we could use the space to our advantage. When you live in a small house, every bit of available space is taken up.

We decided that with me wanting to work from home and Shilts working from home on the odd occasion that a home office would be really beneficial to us. After months of quotes and negotiations, the home office project is on and it’s going to happen in the next few weeks. I am BEYOND EXCITED. We have commissioned a local builder and his team to carry out the work for us and they are going to transform the grotty outhouse room into a functional space for us to work. It’s having a new roof, new drainage, walls bricked up, a new door, a new window, electrics, an old sink ripped out, security, the works!

I have grand plans for the office and have pinning ideas like a crazy lady over the last few weeks as I decide what is going in there and where. We are both having a desk as the room is big enough which will mean that when we are finished for the morning / afternoon we can leave our work in situ and don’t need to pack it away or make way for someone else. We can just shut down the computer and walk away from the room knowing it will all be there when we return.

We are in need of plenty of storage and we have prepped my Dad that we’ll need his handy skills to help us finish off the room. He’ll be hanging storage units up on the wall and putting up the blind whilst we put together the desks and organise the rest of the furniture. We have plans for storage from Ikea, an Ikea worktop and chair too. We need to keep the cost down as much as possible so we are hoping Ikea will be our answer.

I can’t wait to have a space where I can have lists, a desk planner, a calendar all in one place and I can work from home and get stuff done. I am hoping I will be much more productive having everything in one place as I won’t need to hunt around the house for things as it will all be in the office.

Here’s a couple of before photographs of the outhouse;

It’s a room we have wished for, for so long we are so excited for the work to be done. We know it’s going to be messy, it’s going to be inconvenient and it’s going to be pricey but in the long run we think it will all be worth it and will not only add value to our home but will be somewhere we can both work and be much more productive when we need to work! Exciting times ahead!
