Moving house can be an exciting but also often stressful experience. A whole lot will happen on the big day, and it can be nice to know what to expect. From the arrival of the removals team to setting your head down on your pillow in your new bedroom, read on for a first-time movers guide.

Getting the last bits and pieces together

Once you’ve woken up, you’ll start by packing up those last bits and pieces – toiletries, your coffee maker or kettle, and any other things that you couldn’t pack earlier on. You can take a quick walk through your home, making sure that everything is packed up in a box and labeled, ready to go. If you see any boxes that don’t have labels on them, then it’s a good idea to add one, so that you know what’s in the box and where it should go in your new home.

The arrival of the removers

If you’ve chosen to hire a team of specialists to help you with the big day, from somewhere such as Bright Movers, then at some point in the morning you can expect them to turn up. This is when things will really get rolling – you’ll start to load up all your belongings, ready for them to take them to your new home, or to storage if there’s a gap between your move-in and move-out dates.

Unloading

Once you’ve all traveled to your new home, you’re ready to start unloading. You don’t want to just throw everything into your new place randomly, or you’ll end up having to move it all around later. Carefully think about where you want each piece of furniture and each box so that you can save yourself heaps of work later on.

Your removal team will likely be patient with you, so don’t stress – they’re used to people going through this process, and they’re there to help you out. You can finish off with a quick checklist, to make sure that you haven’t lost anything in all the chaos.

Breaks

It can be easy to get caught up in all the excitement and forget to take breaks. This might result in your experiencing a big energy crash halfway through the day, which is no fun at all. Drink plenty of water, and take some 15-minute breaks every now and then to have a quick bite to eat and sit down. You might feel like you can’t afford the time, but you’ll probably end up being more efficient and getting more done than if you were totally exhausted.

Obviously, every move will be slightly different, and this is quite a broad list. To make the move more manageable, we recommend sitting down with a piece of paper beforehand and jotting down everything that needs doing. You might find that you can take care of some of the items on the list beforehand, allowing you to have a (slightly) more relaxed moving day than if you tried to do everything at once.
