As we head into the final half term of the school year, it’s the perfect time to put a new pair of school shoes to the test. With sports days, outdoor learning, playground football matches and plenty of running around still to come, Freddie’s school shoes have one final challenge ahead before the summer holidays. Freddie has been sent a pair of Start-Rite Engineer school shoes to wear throughout the last half term, and we’re looking forward to seeing how they cope with everything school life throws at them.

First Impressions

When the Start-Rite parcel arrived, Freddie couldn’t wait to open the box and take a look inside. As an active eight-year-old, comfort is always high on his priority list, but he also likes shoes that look smart and grown-up. Straight away, the Engineer shoes looked incredibly well made. Crafted from black leather with a classic school shoe design, they strike a lovely balance between smart and practical. The rip-tape fastening makes them easy for children to put on independently, while the strengthened toe and heel areas immediately stood out as features designed to cope with everyday playground adventures. The shoes also feel surprisingly lightweight, which is important for a child who rarely stands still.

Why We Chose the Engineer Style

If there’s one thing I know about Freddie, it’s that he doesn’t walk anywhere if he can run instead. Whether he’s racing around the playground with his friends, joining in football matches at break time or running back to the car after school, his school shoes have a lot of work to do. That’s why the Engineer style felt like such a good fit for him.

The shoes feature enhanced protection around the toe, heel and sides of the foot, helping to support growing feet while standing up to energetic play. They also have padded ankle support and a lightweight flexible sole that allows for natural movement throughout the school day. Knowing Freddie will spend much of the next few weeks running, jumping and playing football in these shoes, it’s reassuring to know they’ve been designed with active children in mind.

Why Properly Fitted School Shoes Matter

One of the things I’ve learned from working with Start-Rite is just how important properly fitted footwear is for growing children. Children spend around 195 days each year wearing their school shoes for at least eight hours a day. During childhood, feet are still developing and changing, which means wearing the correct size and width is incredibly important.

Start-Rite offers whole and half sizes alongside multiple width fittings to help achieve a precise fit. Their shoes are informed by years of research into how children move, helping to support healthy foot development while providing comfort throughout the school day.

If you’re unable to visit a professional shoe fitter, Start-Rite also offers its SizeWise digital measuring tool, allowing parents to measure their child’s feet accurately at home before ordering. We used the digital measuring tool and it’s incredible using a piece of white A4 paper and my mobile phone, Freddie’s feet were digitally measured to be a Large 3H shoe size easily within minutes!

Built for Busy School Days

One of the things that impressed me most while learning more about Start-Rite is the amount of testing that goes into every pair of shoes. The shoes are flexed underwater 30,000 times during testing, and rip-tape fastenings are opened and closed over 5,000 times before reaching the collection. That’s a lot of wear and tear!

As a parent, durability matters. School shoes are a significant purchase, and you want confidence that they’ll last. The Engineer shoes have been specifically developed for playground toughness, with strengthened protection and a sole designed to withstand countless bends and stretches. With Freddie’s track record of turning school shoes into football boots at every opportunity, they’ll certainly be receiving a thorough real-life test over the coming weeks.

Ready for the Final Half Term Challenge

For now, the shoes are still looking beautifully box-fresh and ready for action. Over the next half term, Freddie will be wearing his Start-Rite Engineer shoes every day at school. They’ll be joining him for football games, playground adventures and all the running around that comes naturally to an energetic eight-year-old. I’m particularly interested to see how they hold up compared to previous school shoes we’ve owned and whether they can maintain their smart appearance despite daily wear.

We’ll also be making sure to look after the leather properly using the polish provided, as good quality leather shoes deserve regular care to help them stay looking their best. We’ll be sharing our full review later in the summer after Freddie has put them through their paces, so keep an eye out to see whether they survive the ultimate test: a busy school term with a football-loving eight-year-old!
