Every vacation starts with the journey to get there. As such, your mood on any vacation can be determined by how well you handle that trip, too. If you’re flying out to your destination, then you should prepare for the experience of going to and through the airport. It can be a lot more stressful than it needs to be if you don’t do a little planning in advance. As such, let’s look at a few of the problems you can avoid with a little forethought.

Get Your Pre-Flight Preparation Right
You should start getting ready long before you have to arrive at the airport. Packing for your vacation is the most important part, and you should aim to do that at least one night before your trip so that you have the time to double-check everything and to make sure that your luggage meets the size and weight requirements of the airline. Be sure to check in online as soon as it opens to secure your seat and smooth your arrival at the airport. Similarly, be sure to verify all of your travel documents, including your passports, any necessary visas, and boarding passes, and make sure that they’re all easily accessible when you get to the airport.
Plan And Time Your Arrival
You should aim to time your trip carefully to avoid having to rush through the airport. Arriving two hours ahead of a short-haul flight, or three hours for a long-haul flight, is typically a good rule of thumb, and make sure to factor in traffic, parking, and transfer time to the terminal. Booking airport parking in advance can make that part of the journey a lot less stressful, making sure that you’re not stuck searching for an open space while often saving you money. If your airport offers fast-track security, you should consider opting for it, especially if it’s at a busier time of the day, such as in the morning.
Navigate Security Like A Pro
It might feel like airport security gets more strict and convoluted every time you go for a flight, but there is a lot you can do to prepare for it in advance, as well. You can prevent hold-ups by making sure that all liquids are within the allowed limits and already packed in clear, resealable bags. If you’re bringing any laptops, tablets, or other electronics with you, position them near the top of your bag so that they’re easy to remove and put in separate trays when going through the scanners. Similarly, wear shoes and clothing that are easy to remove, just in case you have to take off any layers during your research. Most importantly, research the list of restricted items and make sure that you don’t have any of them on hand when going through, to lower your chances of being stopped. Sometimes, you might be chosen for a random spot check and can’t do anything about that, but you can at least reduce your chances.
Avoid Boredom While Waiting
If you time everything right, you should be in the departures lounge for some time. The airport might offer a lot to keep you entertained, like a place to grab a drink, shops to browse, and an arcade to play some games in, but not every airport is that well-equipped. So, you should be ready to deal with the boredom yourself. Having some snacks and water at the ready can help (though you might have to buy a drink after getting through security), and you should also consider books, or downloading podcasts or movies in advance to keep yourself busy.
Be Ready For Boarding
It’s important to be aware of the time when you’re waiting for your flight so that you’re not caught off guard during the boarding process. Keep an eye on departure screens for gate changes or delays, as they can update quickly. Once your gate is announced, you might want to start repositioning early so that you’re not rushing through the terminal when your flight is called. Listen for announcements and be aware of your boarding group to avoid confusion. Have your passport and boarding pass ready to speed up the process.
You might not be able to avoid every stress on your vacation, but planning can help you skip over a lot of it. Your flight is the beginning of your trip, and handling it well puts you in a much better position to enjoy the rest of it, as well, so keep the above tips in mind.
