Loft conversion plans for the future

We live in a two bedroom terraced house in the West Midlands. It’s been our home for 16 years. Back when we purchased it, we thought we would move into a larger family home in the future but that hasn’t really happened. Over the last 8 years, our home has adapted to accommodate our family and space is now at a premium. We’re now looking at ways to expand our current home as moving house isn’t an option.

Into the loft?

We have a brilliant loft space that stretches back from the front of the house all the way to the back of the bathroom at the rear. Currently it’s not a space that is safe for anyone to spend much time in, but is a great space for storage. As we only have two bedrooms we have considered the possibility of transforming the loft space into a master bedroom and en-suite. This would enable us to have a bedroom space each for the boys to grow up in and additional space for us in the loft.

Adding a new staircase

If we decided to go ahead with the loft conversion, we would need to factor in the current staircase and an additional staircase to reach the top floor. We have a slice of space between our master bedroom and the boys bedroom currently which would be ideal to use for a staircase but it would be quite dark. Therefore we would also be looking to increase the amount of natural light to enter from the roof space and utilising the space above the existing staircase.

Opening up the space

One of the ways we could open up the space is to use toughened laminated glass for balconies or stair banisters and remove a bricked wall exposing the stair case. The toughened glass would allow light to flow through the space from above but would also act as a wall to help divide up the interior rooms on the first floor. I think it would look really smart and would really help us achieve the bright, spacious family home we need.

It’s definitely an option we’re considering as we look to create more usable space within the house. Have you extended your home upwards and created a loft conversion? It’s an option we’re seriously considering as we look to the future.
