Right now, you may have exhausted a lot of your ways to keep you and your kids sane during the shutdown. All the colouring pages have been coloured, all the blanket forts have been made and taken down, and the things that seemed so fun at first are old hat now.

So, how are some new ways to re-instil a sense of adventure while maintaining social distancing? Gathered below are some fun ways to make you and your kids re-instil that sense of adventure that many of us are craving right now.

Get outside, in a safe way

In an earlier blog, it was discussed that making a den for your kids in the garden helps get them outside to play. While a treehouse might not be possible to get permission on, a little canvas tent with some fun waterproof lighting, like Lepro 240v led strip lights, can make the garden a getaway for adventures.

Pack a snack, and even a cup of lemonade and send your kids out into the great unknown. On cooler days, a mug of hot chocolate complete with marshmallows will make the garden den feel like a cozy adventurous getaway, something even parents could use right now, although if you join your kids, you could opt for a dalgona coffee

Use your imagination and create a time capsule

Imagine where you might be in a year, or two, or five!

Write your future self a letter about what you’re experiencing today, and what you have for hopes for the future. Encourage your kids to do the same, and imagine great big adventures that you hope to do as a family.

Then, gather some things that you see as “normal” everyday things today – a newspaper, a printed recipe of something you just made, a toy your kids cherish but don’t play with currently, and even some of the colouring pages they’ve filled out. Place the goodies in box and hide it with a scheduled date to unbox it in a few years.

If you’re feeling really adventurous, find a weatherproof box to create your time capsule, and bury it in the yard. Just make sure it’s well-marked so you can re-dig it up archeology style in a year or two.

Create a scavenger hunt

Call your neighbours and see if they’d be willing to take part in a scavenger hunt without leaving their back gardens. Have neighbours place specific things outside that the kids are required to find, just make sure to keep social distancing while participating. This a great way to get exercise, interact with friends, and still stay safe. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this, make your own scavenger hunt in your own garden.

Have a picnic

Not all adventures need to be planned. Afterall, spontanaity is one of life’s adventures! Throw together a last-minute picnic menu, and tell your family to grab a blanket and some plates and cutlery, then have a fun outdoor meal, right on the ground. Just make sure not to invite any bugs, and pack the goodies to make s’mores over the grill!

The crisis right now has definitely impacted plans, and many of us are longing for adventures. Staying healthy is important, but there are ways to brighten your days even while staying healthy and responsible, and sometimes that means making adventures happen at home.
