Decorating your lounge is supposed to be fun and it doesn’t have to feel like a full blown makeover show with dramatic reveals of the stressed out host (you). The best spaces will often come together slowly, with a mix of thoughtful choices and a little bit of your personality mixed in. Whether you’re starting from scratch with a brand new home or you’re just freshening things up for the season, there are a few simple tweaks that you can make that make your lounge feel warm, inviting and unmistakably yours. It always starts with the big stuff.

Your furniture sets the tone, so think about your comfort 1st and style second, although ideally you will get both. A cosy sofa is the heart of the room and it doesn’t need to be brand new. It just needs to be well loved and layered with cushions and throws for extra layers of comfort. If you happen to have a feature like a cast iron radiator in the lounge, lean into its charm rather than hiding it. It can add character, especially when paired with softer textures around it. You then need to consider colour because the couch, the cushions, the throws and even the radiator need to stand out and pop.

You don’t need to repaint the entire room to make an impact with colour. You can start small with the cushions and the rugs like we mentioned, but if you’re unsure, stick with a neutral base like soft greys, warm beiges or creamy whites and then sprinkle in the pops of colour through your accessories. As your taste changes, inevitably this happens. You can then switch things up as you want to. The one place that your lounge may fall flat is your lighting, but it’s also a very easy fix.

Overhead lighting alone can feel a bit harsh, so layer it up with floor lamps in dark corners and table lamps near your sofa. You could even be a little bit whimsical with some fairy lights. The goal is to make sure that you’re creating a soft glow that makes the room feel relaxed rather than clinical. Speaking of relaxed, have you considered your walls? Blank walls can make a space like the Lounge feel unfinished, but you don’t need a gallery curator’s eye to fill them. A few framed prints and mirrors to bounce light around, or even a simple shelf with some plants and books can do wonders for the Lounge. Don’t over think it though, because if you like it, it does belong there.

We’ve just talked about plants and they are an easy win for your lounge space, even if you’re not exactly known for keeping things alive. There are plenty of low maintenance options out there because a bit of greenery instantly brings life into a room and softens the overall look. Plus, it does give you something to talk about when guests come over, even if it’s just telling them that it is still alive and you’re not sure how that happened. Decorating your lounge isn’t about you being perfect, it’s just about you creating somewhere that you can relax and show off your personality a little bit.
