  • Sisal or jute for high-traffic areas
  • Cork flooring for bathrooms and kitchens
  • Solid wood for lasting durability

Living Spaces: Daily Exposure Points

Our living areas often contain the highest concentration of synthetic materials. Create a healthier space with these changes:

  • Furniture: Choose natural fibre upholstery – wool, cotton, or linen. These materials age beautifully and can be spot-cleaned effectively.
  • Textiles: Layer rooms with natural materials:
    • Pure wool throws provide warmth without shedding microfibres
    • Cotton or linen curtains filter light beautifully
    • Kapok or wool-filled cushions offer synthetic-free comfort

  • Your clothing: Plastics are widely used to make clothes and their disposal means microplastics leach into the environment and foodchain. Build a wardrobe of natural fibres with merino wool for activewear, organic cotton for everyday items, linen for summer clothes, and hemp for durable workwear.

You don’t have to do everything on this list, but every small change reduces your family’s exposure to microplastics. And while the initial cost of natural materials might be higher, their durability and health benefits offer better long-term value.
