A Collaborative Post
It is a new baby, and you are the new parent. It can be hard to know what to do with your newborn baby. For example, you might not have any idea about how often they should be fed or when they need their nappy changed! This blog post will give you some helpful tips for taking care of your newborn that every parent needs to know about!

1) Newborn babies need to eat every two hours
Do not worry if your baby does not eat that much at first. They need to get their calories from the fat they store in their body, and babies who do this will grow better than those who start out big! Feeding a newborn every two hours means you should wake them for feedings! If your baby sleeps through or wakes up right after feeding, it could be because they are too tired to eat. This can cause low blood sugars, which over time will kill brain cells and make learning hard as an adult! Never let a newborn sleep more than three hours between feeds, even during night sleep. You also want to avoid giving bottles of formula or cow’s milk until after week three. This is because it interferes with the breast milk that they need to grow big and strong! If you are breastfeeding, then your baby will wake up for feedings on their own.
Mothers who only pump should set the alarm every couple of hours while sleeping until their breasts feel full again. Then it is time to feed them! There’s no rush if they do not seem hungry or look like they want food yet; just wait another two hours instead of feeding before the scheduled time mark. After six weeks, new babies can also eat some solid foods, but this does not mean giving them bites off your plate! Baby cereal mixed into formula or breast milk works best for new eaters.
2) Newborn babies need their nappies changed every two hours
This is especially important in the first few weeks of life when their urine and faeces are very concentrated! If you do not change their diaper often enough, it can cause a rash, or they could get an infection from the bacteria that grow in dirty diapers. You will also want to keep your baby’s umbilical cord stump clean and dry, changing the diaper around it as needed. Wipe your baby front to back after each bowel movement, so you do not spread any faecal matter near their genitals. Bathing a newborn should only happen every other day until week four, but make sure to clean them with a wet cloth every day in between baths to remove dirt and dried milk.
3) Newborn babies need to be kept warm
They lose a lot of their body heat through their heads, so you will want to keep a cap on them at all times! You should also dress them in one more layer than an adult would wear in the same weather conditions. If it is cold outside, bundle them up in a blanket and put them in a stroller or car seat. Please make sure the car seat straps are tight, so they do not slide out; you can also use a bunting bag for extra warmth. In hot weather, dress your baby in light clothes and keep them in an air-conditioned room. Use a fan if needed but never leave your baby alone near water!
4) Newborn babies need plenty of sleep
They should be sleeping for 16-18 hours a day in the first few weeks! This can include four to six-hour stretches at night. Put your baby down on their back when you put them to bed and do not use any stuffed animals, pillows, or blankets in the crib until they are over a year old. These items can cause SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Newborns also like to have white noise around them when they sleep, so leaving a fan on low in their room will help keep them calm and relaxed. After a while, a newborn baby will sleep on their own if the environment is suitable. As a newborn mother, you can consider researching the following: How Long Does It Take To Sleep Train Your Baby?
5) Newborn babies need to be stimulated
This means that you should interact with them as much as possible! Talk to them, sing to them, and make eye contact. Play with their hands and feet, and massage their bodies. This will help them learn how to communicate and develop muscle strength. Movement is also very important for newborns, so often put them in a swing or bouncy seat. Start reading to your baby before they are even born; this might help stimulate their brains!
6) Wash your hands before handling a newborn baby
Newborn babies are susceptible to infection, so it’s important to always wash your hands before coming in contact with them. This includes any time you’re handling the baby, changing their diaper, or even just picking them up. Germs can quickly spread and cause an illness if you’re not careful. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds each time, making sure to scrub all over, including under your nails. If you don’t have access to a sink, use a hand sanitiser that contains at least 60% alcohol. Be sure to read the label carefully, as some hand sanitisers can be harmful to newborns.
7) Never shake a newborn baby
Shaking a baby can cause serious injury or death. This is why it’s so important to be careful when handling a newborn and never to shake them. Instead, if you’re feeling frustrated or angry, put the baby down in a safe place and take a few deep breaths until you feel calm. It’s also helpful to have someone else help care for the baby if you’re feeling overwhelmed so that you don’t have to deal with everything on your own.
8) Find ways to bond with your newborn baby
Newborn babies need plenty of love and affection. One of the best ways to bond with your baby is through skin-to-skin contact. This means holding the baby against your bare chest so that they can feel your warmth and hear your heartbeat. You can also hold the baby close while you’re breastfeeding or bottle-feeding them. Spending time bonding with your newborn will help create a strong attachment between you and help them feel secure and loved. Swaddling the baby can be helpful as well. When they’re wrapped snugly, it feels like you’re holding them and helps calm the baby down when they get fussy or over-stimulated.
9) Create a newborn baby room checklist
When you’re preparing the nursery for your new baby, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and forget about some important details that can make a big difference in their lives, like where you’ll place the crib or how often you’ll change the sheets. To avoid this, create a newborn baby room checklist before they arrive so that all of those little things are accounted for beforehand. It would help if you also thought about what other items may be needed, such as clothing, bedding, toys, diapers, bottles/breastfeeding supplies, etc. Having everything on hand before your baby arrives will ensure that nothing is forgotten and help keep everyone calm when they first come home from the hospital.
10) Buy a monitor
One of the most important items you’ll need for your newborn baby is a monitor. This will allow you to keep an eye on them when they’re sleeping in their crib and ensure that they’re always safe and sound. There are many different types of monitors available on the market, so be sure to do some research before purchasing. Choose one that has good reviews and meets your specific needs. Having a monitor will give you peace of mind and allow you to get some much-needed rest while your baby sleeps.
11) Don’t forget about postpartum depression
After giving birth, it’s normal to experience a range of emotions, including happiness, sadness, anxiety, and el. However, if these feelings persist or become severe, it may signify postpartum depression. This is why it’s important to monitor your feelings and seek help if you think something isn’t right. It’s better to take action before things get out of control so that both you and your child remain safe at all times.
12) Get enough sleep when caring for a newborn baby
Many new mothers assume they’ll have plenty of time to rest once their baby arrives because they won’t need anything else done around the house anymore. Unfortunately, this isn’t always true since there are many daily tasks involved in taking care of an infant, including feeding them, changing their diapers, putting them down for naps and bedtime, etc. To ensure that you’re well-rested, try to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, even on weekends. And when possible, ask for help from others so that you can take a break.
In conclusion, newborn babies have a lot of needs and require constant attention. The tips in this post will help you keep your baby safe, secure, and healthy without having to feel overwhelmed or stressed out all the time.
