In a world where there are many challenges in everyday life with finances becoming increasingly tight and retirement ages are pushed back, it’s becoming progressively commonplace for families to pool their resources and face the future together. Many families decide to live under one roof with younger and older generation living together for the greater good. So whilst it might be beneficial to live with the older generation financially, what other benefits can family members expect from intergenerational living.
Benefits of living with an older generation
A wider understanding of each other
In a family where there are young children and elder grandparents, the benefits for both generations is vast. They both can learn from one another and become more accepting of their differences. Many children are living in a time which is completely unknown to their grandparents. Their grandparents wouldn’t have had the technology that our children use without frustration on a daily basis. Grandparents can learn from their grandchildren and vice versa. Grandparents can teach their grandchildren skills that were taught when resources were limited and ‘make do and mend’ was a way of living not just a phrase.
Increases potential for an active lifestyle
Living with children is never a sedentary thing, Children are always on the move whether it’s for sport, a hobby or for fun. Children naturally encourage activity and this could positively benefit the elder generation. This could be through taking more walks with the grandchildren, playing with them in the garden, taking the dog for a walk or encouraging participation on a console. However when the time comes to modify the home with the older generation in mind, families can purchase straight stairlifts that won’t hinder access for the young whilst allowing Grandparents to be increasingly mobile around the home. Age isn’t going to stop them enjoying their independence.
Keeping family history alive
Throughout our lives we go through experiences that are often remarkable. These periods of time are what shape us and make us who we are. Many of the elder generation have experience in facing adversity and surviving tough times. All of which add to the colourful history of our families. It’s only with experience that these stories can be told and can really be appreciated by those younger than us. Topics learnt at school can spark many interests in a variety of topics, of which the elder generation may have experience and tales to tell. These stories will also allow younger members of the family to appreciate who they really are and where their family traits come from.
Less lonely times ahead
When you live with a big family, chances are that you will never be lonely. There will always be someone around to watch television with, to have a cup of tea with and put the world to rights with. Living with older generations can prevent depression and low moods. As the family grows older, there will always be someone to hold a hand and face the future together.
