A long journey in your car can often be tricky and it’s worthwhile to ensure whether or not your car insurance can handle it. So, ask yourself the following questions if you don’t wish to land yourself in a soup while you are off on a pleasant and soothing car trip.

How can location impact your insurance cover?

Your destination is something that you need to consider first and foremost before you embark on a journey. You need to take into account whether you will be staying within the provinces or move outside as every province will have a varying minimum liability rate.

If you have bought an inexpensive policy for your state, it might not provide you much cover in another state, then you must check the minimum liability rate of the destination where you’re headed to in UK / Ireland or the places that you will be driving through enroute.

In case you are planning to move outside Ireland or UK, you must keep in mind that some insurance companies don’t automatically cover accidents outside the country. Before you set out to distant locations, make sure that you are fully aware of the geographical limitations of your policy.

Does the Insurance Policy Provide Any Roadside Assistance?

You would also have to make provisions for a jack and spare tire while going on a long trip. In case, you don’t have adequate space in your vehicle, you should try obtaining road assistance. In all likelihood, you might already have roadside assistance when you bought your vehicle. However, there are also other avenues like theaa membership that provide more than just breakdown assistance.

Does Your Policy Cover Additional Drivers?

If you are going out on a long journey, it is inevitable that you will take along a pool of friends who can take turns at the wheel. Most insurance policies will usually cover, albeit partially, any driver if they have the consent of the car owner.

However, if you are taking someone’s car who is not present on the trip, it is important that the owner knows what you are planning to use the car for. If you don’t have the permission to take the car out of country, you must make sure that you drive it only around town.

Does a Trailer Make Any Difference?

Every parent is well aware of the efforts that are needed to drive their kids around the country. Now if you are planning to go on a road trip with your family that includes your spouse and kids, there will be a lot of luggage. So, it would be a good idea to bring along more luggage in a trailer attached to the back of your vehicle.

While many insurance companies will provide coverage for the trailer that’s attached to the back of their vehicle, there are certain provinces where the trailer will have to be separately covered. Even if your trailer has coverage from the insurance company, it will be a good idea to get comprehensive coverage to protect your trailer and follow road safety advice, as well as, the items present in it.

It would be best if you tried making sure that your policy offers services that will keep you going. You would not want an unpleasant incident to ruin your family’s road trip. So, make sure that your insurance policy provides optimal coverage for all eventualities during the summer vacation.
