*A collaborative post
When the children are finally in bed and the house is in relative order, I like to take some time enjoying a variety of crafts. I love to try my hand at different things and over the years have tried cross stitch to quilting, jewellery making to making Christmas decorations . I love being able to lose the time engrossed in an activity and seeing my hard work and effort result in a visually appealing way. There’s so many more crafts to try out so in the new year, I’ll be trying paper cutting, digital scrapbooking and origami.
Why try out new crafts?
First and foremost, I love a challenge. Crafting for me is something that I love to do but it never really comes naturally. I have to work hard at something to improve on it and after trial and error, I usually get the hang of said craft or learn to love my haphazard ways. Secondly, I really enjoy making beautiful things. I love how you can combine a range of materials and the end result is a piece of satisfying art. Finally, I love that I get lost in craft and I seem to forget the trials of parenthood and it helps me relax of an evening.

Paper cutting
The art of paper cutting is something completely new to me but I really love the idea of it and the pieces that can be created. For paper cutting you don’t really need to purchase really expensive equipment; you would need a cutting board, scalpel, card stock, a glue stick, masking tape, clear tape and plain white paper. You would also need an idea of an image that you would like to cut. Design Bundles is a great website that has hundred (if not thousands) of images you can purchase SVG cuts to cut out and use. Using the templates, you can create stunning pictures that will look fantastic.

Digital scrapbooking
Whilst I have experience with scrapbooking, I love the idea of digital scrapbooking. There’s less mess, it takes up a whole lot less space and from examples that I have seen it’s very aesthetically pleasing. To start digital scrapbooking you’ll need to use some digital scrapbooking software; Adobe Photoshop Elements or Corel PaintShop Pro is said to be good choices amongst others. Once you have the software, you can create whatever your heart desires. You can buy templates, elements and all sorts of other patterns and textures in digital graphic form to create and design your scrapbook pages.
Origami
Origami, the art of folding paper, has been around for hundreds of years and is said to bring luck. Origami uses a single sheet of paper folded in a certain way to create a figure, often multiple sheets of paper are added for increased detail. Luckily for me, as the craft has been around for years there are instructions galore ranging from the very simple to more complicated designs. I love how something so simple can be manipulated to create something wonderful.
Are you going to try out a new craft in the new year? I’d love to know more about it. Leave me a comment below about what you’ll be trying next year.
