A rare night off at The Green Man, Middleton // Review

It has been a very long time since my husband and I had been out for dinner together, just the two of us.  As busy parents with two young children, we always seem to be busy and don’t get the time to ourselves. So when we were invited to a preview of the new menu and to take a look around the recently refurbished The Green Man pub in Middleton, we managed to persuade the in-laws to look after the children and escaped over to Tamworth to enjoy a rare night off. 

The Green Man in Middleton is a country pub nestled deep into the Staffordshire countryside. After an extensive refurbishment, the pub has a brand-new look with an overhauled menu offering a carefully curated collection of dishes promising delicious flavours, inspired by the seasons and the best that the countryside can offer.

Upon our arrival, we had a very warm welcome by the management of the pub and was invited to have a look around and make ourselves at home. The decor at The Green Man is really sophisticated with cosy browns, dark greens and golds mixed with nature inspired decor and brass and velvet touches. The log fire was roaring and it felt really cosy and inviting.

We ordered drinks and I was really taken by their gin bar which had a fantastic array of flavoured syrups, fresh and dried fruits. The gin bar may have been a one-off for us but it went down well with everyone who had a gin to enjoy! I’m pretty sure it’ll make another appearance very soon.

I love a roaring fire so we sat at one of the two tables in front of the fire with views across the bar to enjoy our meal. There’s a brilliant space throughout the pub, it’s cosy without feeling like you’re invading the couple’s table next to you.

We were given menus to look through and if you’re a foodie, then you’re going to love the menu. There is so much choice with lots of meat and seasonal vegetables, there’s a daily fish menu and also a brilliant vegan menu with plenty of choice too!

The All Day Menu at The Green Man is varied with something for everyone. We really struggled to make our minds up as there was so many tempting choices. We finally decided to try out the Sticky Pig Sharing Board with a side of breads for our starter and opted for our mains which included 7oz fillet steak for my husband and I had the Buttermilk Chicken, Somerset Brie and Bacon Pie.

If you’re thinking of booking here for a meal I would say don’t eat anything a good few hours before you arrive as you’ll need plenty of room for the food. When our sharing starter arrived, it looked incredible (attention to detail is something high on the agenda here) and it smelt really good. The Sticky Pig sharing board was a collection of 4 dishes all using pork in a variety of different ways. I really enjoyed the scotch egg with pickles and my husband really rated the pork cheek and the pork belly.

Our main meals arrived and I did doubt for a second how we would fit it all in. We found the meals to be very generous in size and really good value for money. My husband’s steak was cooked just the way he liked it, although he would have loved a blue cheese sauce to accompany it to be his ultimate steak ever! My Buttermilk Chicken, Somerset Brie and Bacon Pie was served with mash and vegetables plus a pouring saucepan of gravy.

The meals were both beautifully presented which made us really want to dig right in.  Unfortunately I couldn’t eat of all my pie, but that’s due to my greediness from the starter and not the main meal. It was all really good food, delicious flavours and superbly put together.

To end our evening at The Green Man we decided to take a look at the dessert menu because we didn’t want to miss out on the good stuff. My husband ordered the Home-Baked Chocolate Brownie and I ordered the Lemon Meringue Flamed Alaska.

As with the rest of our meal, our desserts were so good and very generous. If one thing’s for sure, you’re definitely getting a good feed and great value for money at The Green Man. It was all so tasty we’re planning on coming back with our Parents in the not so distant future as we know they’d enjoy the food. We had a really lovely evening in such a relaxing and welcoming atmosphere, I can imagine it’ll be a very popular restaurant in the next few months.
