AD | Soft Launching Christmas: Get Your Home Ready Before December

A collaborative post

Mariah Carey voice… IT’S TIMEEEEEE! I know, I know. We haven’t even made it to Halloween yet, and I’m already talking about Christmas. But hear me out, because this year I’m embracing the idea of soft launching Christmas and, honestly, I think we’re onto something.

Every year, Christmas seems to creep up on us at an alarming rate. One minute we’re enjoying autumn walks, kicking through fallen leaves and getting cosy at home, and the next we’re panic buying presents, trying to remember where we put the Christmas decor and wondering how on earth December has arrived so quickly.

With work, family life and all the usual everyday chaos, I don’t particularly want to spend the first few weeks of December feeling like I’m racing against the clock. I’d much rather spread the festive jobs out over the next few weeks, introduce a few seasonal touches around the home and get some of the preparation done before December arrives.

That’s where the idea of soft launching Christmas comes in. Instead of transforming the whole house overnight, it’s about introducing little festive touches gradually, making a start on your Christmas to-do list and giving yourself permission to enjoy the season without feeling as though you need to do everything at once.

I’ve been having a look at some beautiful home pieces from Very to help me get started, and I’ve found some lovely ways to bring a little Christmas magic into our home without going completely overboard.

1. Start with your front door

One of the easiest ways to introduce a little Christmas cheer is with a wreath on your front door. I’ve chosen a beautiful, natural-looking Christmas wreath with a big red bow. It’s traditional without being too fussy, and I love how the natural tones give it that understated festive feel.

I love coming home to a welcoming front door, especially on those cold, dark evenings when all you want to do is get inside, put the kettle on and get cosy.

You don’t need to cover every surface in tinsel or hang decorations from every available hook to make your home feel festive. Sometimes one well-chosen piece is enough to get you in the Christmas spirit. A wreath is also an easy way to make the outside of your home feel festive before you’ve even started decorating indoors.

My tip: Start your Christmas decorating with one focal point, whether that’s your front door, hallway or living room. It gives you a starting point and helps you decide on the colours and style you’d like to carry through the rest of your home.

2. Create a festive dining table without going over the top

The dining table is one of those areas that can make a real difference to how your home feels at Christmas. Whether you’re hosting a big family dinner, enjoying a lazy Sunday lunch or simply sitting down together after a busy day, a few thoughtful touches can make an ordinary meal feel a little more special.

I’ve chosen a beautiful Christmas garland for the table that compliments my front door wreath. It features pine cones, berries and natural tones, bringing everything together without making the table feel too busy. I love the idea of keeping things fairly simple. The garland adds texture and interest, while the natural colours make it feel warm and inviting rather than overly glittery.

I’ve also chosen a new dining set, which is perfect for creating a lovely table setting but can be used throughout the year, too. I’m always a fan of buying pieces that aren’t restricted to one season, especially when they can be dressed up for Christmas and then used for everyday family meals once the decorations come down.

Add a few decorative bows, your favourite glasses and some simple napkins, and you’ve got a table that feels ready for the festive season without needing to spend a fortune on Christmas-specific tableware. Getting your table styling sorted early also means you can enjoy it for longer, rather than saving everything for Christmas Day itself.

My tip: Choose a colour palette and stick to it. Natural greenery, warm neutrals and little pops of red work beautifully together. You can then add or remove seasonal accessories depending on the occasion.

3. Bring Christmas into the bedroom with cosy bedding

Christmas isn’t just about decorating the rooms where everyone gathers. I love the idea of adding a little seasonal comfort to the bedroom, too.

I’ve chosen some festive Highland cow bedding, and it’s such a lovely way to introduce Christmas bedding into the home without committing to a full festive bedroom makeover.

The Highland cow design is fun and seasonal, but what I particularly love is that it’s reversible. One side has the festive design, while the other features a gorgeous red and green tartan pattern.

The tartan is cosy, classic and understated, making it ideal for those who want a little Christmas styling without having a room that feels like Santa’s grotto. It also means I can switch the look around depending on my mood.

As the evenings get colder, there’s nothing quite like climbing into a freshly made bed with cosy bedding and settling down for the night. Add a warm drink, a good book or a favourite Christmas film, and suddenly those darker evenings don’t feel quite so bad. It’s a simple way to make your bedroom feel seasonal while still keeping it practical.

My tip: Look for reversible bedding, cushions and throws that offer more than one look. You can enjoy the festive side in the run-up to Christmas and switch to the other design when you fancy a change, without needing to buy something completely new.

4. Make a ‘Done by December’ list

One of the best things about soft launching Christmas is that it gives you the chance to spread out all those little jobs that can become overwhelming when they’re left until the last minute. Rather than trying to do everything in one weekend, I’m making a list of the things I’d like to get sorted before December begins.

Here’s what I’d include on a ‘Done by December’ checklist:

  • Get the Christmas decorations organised. Have a look at what you’ve already got, check what’s broken and work out whether there’s anything you genuinely need.
  • Choose your Christmas home accessories. A wreath, garland or a few seasonal cushions can make a difference without needing a complete room makeover.
  • Start thinking about presents. Make a list of who you need to buy for and pick up gifts gradually rather than leaving everything until the final shopping rush.
  • Check your Christmas hosting essentials. Make sure you’ve got enough plates, glasses and serving dishes if you’re having people over.
  • Plan your festive food. Think about what you’ll need for Christmas dinner, any family gatherings and those all-important festive treats.
  • Get ahead with the practical jobs. Check batteries for decorations, sort out wrapping paper and make sure you know where the Christmas lights have been stored.
  • Make time for the fun stuff. Plan a Christmas film night, a festive walk or a day out looking at Christmas lights. The season shouldn’t be all chores!

You don’t have to tick everything off straight away, either. The point is to make December feel more manageable, not create another list that leaves you feeling guilty.

5. Introduce festive touches gradually

The beauty of soft launching Christmas is that there’s no need to do everything at once. Over the next few weeks, you could start with your front door wreath, then add a garland to your hallway a few days later. Bring out your festive bedding when the weather turns colder, and start thinking about your Christmas tree and decorations when you’re ready.

You could even introduce a little Christmas scent with a seasonal candle, swap your usual cushions for something with a festive texture or pop a few pine cones into a decorative bowl. These small changes are easy to fit around everyday life, and they let you enjoy your home feeling a little more festive for longer.

I’m also trying to be mindful about buying things that I’ll use beyond Christmas. Choosing versatile dining pieces, reversible bedding and natural decorations means I can get more use out of them, rather than filling the cupboards with things that only come out for a few weeks each year. And if you’re someone who loves Christmas and wants the tree up in November, go for it! If you prefer to wait until December for the big decorations, that’s absolutely fine, too. There really isn’t a right or wrong way to do it.

6. Don’t forget to enjoy the build-up

It’s easy to get caught up in the pressure of creating the perfect Christmas. We see beautifully decorated homes, perfectly styled tables and endless festive inspiration online, and it’s tempting to feel as though we need to recreate it all.

But for me, Christmas is about making the most of the time we have together, creating lovely memories and enjoying those little moments that make this time of year feel special. With the boys getting older, I’m increasingly aware of how quickly family traditions change. I want to enjoy the build-up to Christmas rather than spending it worrying about everything that still needs doing.

If getting the wreath on the door early makes me smile when I get home, or the new bedding makes a cold evening feel a little cosier, then that’s a win in my book. And if having the dining table styled before December means one less thing to think about when family comes over, even better!

That’s why I’m embracing the ‘Done by December’ idea. It’s not about rushing Christmas or skipping autumn altogether. It’s about making a few small changes now so there’s more time to enjoy the things that really matter when December arrives.

Is it too early to start soft launching Christmas?

I don’t think so! There’s a difference between getting a few things organised early and going all-out with the Christmas tree before you’ve finished your Halloween treats. Soft launching Christmas is about finding what works for you and your home, whether that means getting organised behind the scenes or introducing a few festive touches that make you smile.

So, if you’re already thinking about Christmas, consider this your permission to get started. Make that list, sort out the decorations, pick up a few thoughtful pieces and tackle the jobs you’ve been putting off.

Let’s make this the year we get to December feeling a little more organised, a little less stressed and ready to enjoy the festive season. Because, let’s be honest, Christmas is far too short to spend all of it doing chores. Now, where did I put the Christmas playlist?
