Our Shilton Boys // August 2020

I cannot believe it’s time for another instalment of our Shilton boys. It’s mid-August which means we round up the last month and what a busy month it has been. The main change for our boys this month has been to their sleeping arrangements and their new bedroom. At the end of July, Shilts had annual leave so we decided to change up the bedrooms and swap them with the boys. This meant the boys would have more space to sleep, more space for their toys and more space to play in. We are so pleased with how well it has gone.

Bye bye cotbed days

As we moved the boys into our old bedroom, we took the plunge and decided to say goodbye to Freddie’s cotbed. He’s now 2.5 years old and sleeps well but he needed more space. We felt it was the right time to move him into a single bed and so far, he has slept brilliantly. We had a couple of nights where he fell out of bed as he adjusted to the new space but we bought him a couple of bed guards to keep him penned in at night and they have really helped.

He has adjusted to sleeping in the single bed really well. We usually put him to bed around 7:00-7:30pm after a story and he falls asleep on his own in his bedroom. He hasn’t got out and walked around, he’s just stayed in bed and fallen asleep. The difference is incredible to how we experienced bedtimes with his big brother. Olly really struggled with sleeping in a single bed all by himself. He would regularly get out and visit us through the night but thankfully Freddie is more content about sleeping in his own bed and I’m sure it’s because he sleeps in the same room as Olly.

Coping with change

I’ve written many times about how Olly doesn’t cope with change very well but we have been so proud of how he’s coped with the bedroom change. He hasn’t grumbled at all and has loved having so much extra space to play in. Whilst we were redecorating, the boys slept over at their Grandparents house (for the first time since Freddie was born) and it went brilliantly. Olly slept well and really enjoyed sleeping over at his Nan and Grandad’s house. It’s such a small thing but actually a huge milestone for us all. We’re hoping it paves the way now to future sleepovers and we might be able to enjoy a weekend away soon.

Enjoying days out and exploring

During the summer holidays, aside from the redecorating, we’ve been going out on visits to our local National Trust properties and visiting local flower fields. It’s been nice to get out of the house, stretch their legs and see something new. Earlier in the month we drove up to Southport and stayed over night to enjoy a night by the seaside. We drove further up the coast to Lytham St Annes and it was lovely to see the boys playing in the seawater and enjoying the beach. Freddie is however, not a fan of squidgy sand so had to put his shoes back on to play in the water and the sand.

With only a couple of weeks left until Olly is due to go back to school, we’re making the most of spending time together and having a fairly relaxed routine. We will miss pj days and lazy mornings when the alarm goes back on. I dread to think how much Freddie will miss having his big brother about but Olly needs some routine back and is desperate to see his friends so it’s definitely time to go back.
