The Ordinary Moments #6 His fourth birthday

On Friday, Olly celebrated his fourth birthday. I can’t quite believe where the four years have gone as they have really flown by. Time really does fly when you’re having fun. We had wrapped all his presents the night before after a little tea party we had with our family.

There was the most amazing birthday cake, plenty of party food, mini cocktail sausages and balloons. We know how to throw a birthday tea party! He didn’t want a party and to be honest it might have been a bit overwhelming for him so I’m quite glad really.

Olly woke up all excited to see what presents he had been given. We went downstairs and he saw a big bundle of presents on the day bed and a big pile of cards. He couldn’t wait to open them. Luckily, I had wrapped his gifts very loosely so it didn’t take much effort to open them. He had a couple of Orchard Toys jigsaw puzzles, a dart board (a childrens version) lots of clothes, his friend from pre-school gave him a fantastic transporter lorry with cars in (the most perfect gift for Olly), Paw Patrol stationery, more Brio to add to his collection and a Big Jigs crane and construction set. Thankfully, our family and friends gifted him money or clothes for his birthday which is most appreciated as he needs a complete new wardrobe as he’s growing far too quickly!

We wanted to keep his routine on Friday so we sent him off to pre-school with a bag of treats for his friends. Unfortunately, he thought that being four meant he had to stay at school all day and have lunch in the hall with Reception class which of course he didn’t but he didn’t believe us and he got really upset. We tried to reassure him but I think he thought that now he was four, he was the same as his friends in reception. It’s funny how they get these ideas in their head and can’t shake them off until we prove them otherwise.

He had a really wonderful birthday and it was really lovely that he loved every part of it. It even snowed briefly on his birthday just like it did when he was born. We spent the weekend away at Butlins (watch out for another post about that soon) and he’s had the best birthday ever, which is just what we want for our kids isn’t it? For them to have the best fun and have big happy smiles on their faces. A birthday is such an ordinary thing but can mean so much to them.
