One of the experiences you will find yourself having at some point or another if you travel a lot is the layover or stopover. This is where you have a period of time in between flights, or between any two connecting modes of transport, and you need to figure out what you are going to do with it. Some people relish this experience, and others fear it, so how you feel will obviously have a huge effect on how you are going to generally approach it.

But if you are wondering how to make the most of a layover, read on. The following tips should help you to do just that, and by the end you should have a pretty strong idea of what kind of approach you might want to take. As you are about to find out, the layover can actually be a very simple and easy thing to boss.
First Check Your Options
Before you even get into trying to figure out what to do with your layover, it might be a good idea to check if you actually need one! A lot of the time, it should be possible to avoid it altogether if you simply change your plans slightly. It’s one of those times when being a little creative can make a world of difference, in fact. So take a look at your options and make sure that you are actually in need of a layover. If you are not, you might want to think about how to avoid it.
Of course, if you want a layover, then you need to look at your options and make sure that you actually have one. You should try to get as much time as possible to do all the things you want to do. That should include time for getting from the airport to the city and back, for instance. So it’s generally going to be a really wise move to look into this first of all.

Store Your Luggage
If you need to receive your luggage between connecting flights, as is often the case if you are going with two different airlines, then you need to think about what you are going to do with that luggage in order for you to be able to enjoy your layover. You don’t want to carry your luggage with you around the city, no matter where in the world you are – this is never enjoyable and always makes the experience considerably more stressful.
So what are your options? The best way is to find some luggage lockers where you can store your luggage. You will find these at the airport, as well as various parts around town, and you should be able to find one that works for you in most places. There is no doubt that this makes for a much more relaxed and easier-going layover, so make sure that you are thinking about this – and book in advance if you are able, to save money and time.
Get Lounge Access
For short layovers especially, there is something to be said for having access to one of the lounges in the airport. These are normally reserved for travelers who have paid extra to have some comfort while they wait for a plane. You will often have access to food and drinks, sometimes included and sometimes not, and a comfortable place to spend some time. In fact, even for longer layovers, coming back to the airport to a lounge can be wonderful, so it’s something to think about.
You might be wondering whether it is prohibitively expensive to obtain lounge access. Well, it can be, but it doesn’t have to be – it is often the case that you can get it for quite little by getting it either last minute or way in advance. Both of those circumstances usually mean that you can save some money. However you do it, this is definitely a great way to make the most of a stopover.
See The Main Sights
Whatever city you are in, there are always going to be five to a dozen or so main sights that tourists tend to see when they go there. And if it is a new city to you, these are a good place to start. Often just going to see these will mean that you are having a great time and that you are likely to see the main things that take people there anyway. If you are happy to travel around the city for a day, you should often be able to see most of the main things in one day.
As well as anything else, you will probably feel that you are getting a lot done and making the most of your time, so that’s something to think about. And you should find that your layover is truly enjoyable.
Find Somewhere Comfortable To Spend Time For Free
We’ve looked at the option of a lounge, but this is not the only place you can go to spend some time in comfort. In fact, in most cities, there will be places where you can go and sit for as long as you like without having to pay a penny. In most places, that would be the library, for instance. If you can find a public library, you should be able to spend all day there if you like. At the very least, it’s somewhere to sit for a while and get out of the sun to have your lunch.
Public parks serve a similar purpose, too. And if you think about it, you should be able to find quite a few similar options to consider for this need.
As you can see, the long layover can be quite an enjoyable thing to do. As long as you approach it the right way, there is every chance it will prove to be one of the best parts of the traveling experience.
