If you’re struggling to conceive, know that you’re not alone. This is a common problem that a lot of couples face, and it can be upsetting and emotionally draining. If starting a family is one of your main goals in life, it may feel like your whole world is imploding when you’re facing the possibility of not being able to, and this can become a major source of stress in your life.

Thankfully, it’s rarely the case that nothing can be done. In this day and age, there are some truly fantastic strategies and treatment options, and with so many to try, the odds are most certainly in your favour. Naturally, though, this whole situation can be pretty overwhelming to navigate. Some methods seem complicated, and it’s difficult to know what would be the best choice for you.

While you should be speaking to your doctor when it comes to making that decision, this article is here to get you started with the process. Here are four alternative methods to consider as you embark on this journey.

  1. In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)

IVF treatment is one of the most powerful fertility treatments on the market. It works by stimulating the ovaries to produce eggs, which are then retrieved and fertilised with sperm within the laboratory setting. The embryo is then transferred back into the uterus where it can develop naturally. It’s effective for problems that result anywhere along the chain within the natural process of fertilisation, and by taking that initial part out of the equation, most people have excellent success.

IVF is usually recommended when the other treatments discussed below haven’t worked. It’s fantastic for managing complexities that less invasive methods simply don’t have the scope for, and for this reason, it’s the leading form of treatment.  While the treatment used to be very expensive, there are many services available today that provide IVF at a significantly reduced cost via finance plans, so this is always an option if you’re struggling.

2.. Ovulation Induction

For some people, the reason they can’t conceive stems from the fact that they’re not ovulating regularly enough, or that when they do ovulate, it’s inconsistent. Today, ovulation can be induced with certain drugs (namely clomiphene citrate), which help to stimulate the ovulation process. This can be a very effective method for women facing ovulation issues, and it’s often the case that these medications are combined with other methods for an augmented effect.

Ovulation induction is also one of the cheapest strategies available, so it’s often used before anything else if the person is considered a candidate.

3. Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is another powerful option people use, and it’s also highly affordable.  This procedure works by having prepared sperm placed directly into the uterus during the ovulation window, significantly increasing the chances of the sperm reaching and fertilising the egg. It’s used across the board for a wide variety of cases, from cervical mucus problems to infertility that otherwise can’t be explained. It’s one of the least invasive methods available, too, making it popular for those who don’t want to make the jump to IVF and wish to exhaust their options. In general, it’s usually best to consider IUI before you think about IVF, but everyone’s different, so speak to your doctor.

4. Lifestyle Modifications

And finally, there are lifestyle modifications. While this isn’t an exact treatment per se, the reality is that a couple’s lifestyle can play a significant role in fertility.  Improving the quality of your diet should be your first port of call, and the best place to start is this NHS article. Regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight are also vital, and working to reduce your alcohol intake and stop smoking can similarly make a measurable difference.

Regarding exercise and nutrition specifically, the best approach is to work on this together as a couple. You could go to the gym together or play sports on an evening, like badminton or table tennis. Having meals together also helps the two of you stay on track and motivate each other, and with both people making changes to their lifestyle, the odds of it being a factor in conception are reduced considerably.

Wrapping Up

Hopefully, you’re now feeling a little more comfortable about the process of exploring your options. It’s rare for none of these approaches to work, and as mentioned, some are used in combination to strengthen the odds. Take things one step at a time and always listen to your doctors. Good luck!
