Have you been trying to get pregnant but feel defeated as each time you try, you’re only met with that negative on a pregnancy test? It’s like a punch to the gut. While there are options to consider when pregnant, sometimes the biggest thing you can do is to just talk to your doctor, such as about fertility. So, here are some signs of when you should speak to your doctor about the potential of you being infertile.

You’ve Been Trying for Months
It’s best to speak with your doctor if you have been trying to get pregnant for more than a year, especially if you are over 35. This time frame is because of the impact that age can have on fertility. Even though getting medical help can be an emotional and expensive process, it is still worth it. This is actually the biggest sign of them all. Plus, when you have a fertility consultation, the question of how long you’ve been trying unprotected sex is going to come up anyways.
There’s a History of Miscarriages
Needless to say, miscarriages are incredibly painful, both physically and mentally. While one or even two can technically be considered normal, if there are more than this, then it’s absolutely going to raise some alarms. If you have had recurrent miscarriages, you may need to see a specialist for help in conceiving. This means that your healthcare provider will test the level of a pregnancy hormone in your blood, and they might take tissue from your uterus to check for problems. They can also test for conditions like chromosomal abnormalities and bleeding disorders. They will also assess your health history and might do blood tests for immune system issues, such as autoimmune disorders.
There’s a Family History of Infertility
Does infertility run in your family? There are a lot of reasons why this can happen, but if it’s the same reason for all of the other women in your family, then this will give you a good indication of if and how it’s happening to you. But in the end, you’re still going to have to try for at least six months to a year before reaching out to a doctor (typically).
You Have a Medical Condition
The good news is that most healthcare providers are prepared to talk about fertility with their patients. They want to help you conceive and are often well-versed in the latest technologies. In fact, if you have any concerns about your reproductive health, such as sex-related bleeding between periods or after sex, it’s worth mentioning to your doctor. Honestly, the more information they have, the better. Even if you don’t have a medical condition, but instead something runs in the family, it’s best to still let them know, as this can also be a sign.
Irregular or Absent Menstrual Cycle
Last but not least, how is your cycle going? Irregular menstrual cycles, bleeding between periods, or abnormal discharge are all signs that you may not be ovulating normally. You can also check for ovulation by measuring your morning body temperature and using ovulation predictor kits. Even if you’re experiencing painful periods or heavy bleeding, these are also major indicators that you should discuss with your doctor, as this could be an underlying cause of potential infertility.
