You love your kids, but as a parent, you hardly get time to yourself. People enjoy working out because it helps them feel more energized and creates a healthier lifestyle, but it’s not always possible to step away and go to the gym when you have kiddos to look after. Here are some ways you can easily build in a workout around your children’s schedule. They might even want to join you!

1. Clean Up the Area
Waiting for your kids to pick up their space might take a while. Why not work on picking up their things yourself instead? While it’s good to teach your kids responsibility for their own things, it’s often faster to do it yourself. Plus, all the bending and reaching you’ll be doing can help keep you active. Clean rooms can also help their inhabitants avoid allergies and feel better mentally. You’ll save less stress by having a toy-cleaning routine.
2. Pick Your Kids Up
Some kids love to be lifted into the air — which means that you have living weights for your workout. Pick up your child and hold them up in the air, then bring them back down. Make sure to maintain proper posture while you’re lifting your kids, or it might wreak havoc on your back. Also, make sure that your kids enjoy being picked up. Some don’t like to be very high up, and your kids’ wants come first. If your kids don’t enjoy being lifted, there are still other ways for you to get a workout in.
3. Go Swimming
Swimming is an activity that uses almost all the muscles in your body, and kids love the pool. Whether you go to a public pool or a loved one’s house or have a swimming spot in your own backyard, you can be sure that your kids will enjoy splashing around in the water and entertaining themselves. You can take the time to monitor them while you swim laps or enjoy treading water to get your workout in.

4. Play Outside
Strength training is great for both kids and adults. With the help of play equipment, you can strengthen your muscles and improve your posture while encouraging your children to do the same. Even if you don’t have any play equipment outside, you can still go exploring in the backyard and toss a ball around or find something new to play with.
5. Watch Exercise Videos With Them
You can find family-friendly exercise videos for free online. These workouts should be safe for your children, who might enjoy them. You can have a few minutes of exercise sprinkled throughout the day, or you can designate a chunk of time for it. That way, you and your kids will feel tired out afterward and be ready for something relaxing — or even a nap!
6. Have a Dance Party
Kids love to dance, and one of the coolest things you can do for them is to start a dance party out of nowhere. Turn on a playlist of their favorite tunes and jam out together. Show them some moves that were popular when you were a kid. Dancing can benefit both you and your children, as practicing their moves can help your children’s cognitive development, thanks to the creativity it promotes. It’s an excellent option if you’re ever searching for an activity to do.
7. Turn Chores Into A Race
If you can do so safely, turning your kids’ chores into a race can help you clean the house and get your exercise in. Remind your kids not to run around stairs or slick areas of the house. You can consider it cardio when you’re moving a basket of laundry into another room while completing tasks as quickly as possible. When everyone works together, you’ll find your house a lot cleaner, and you’ll all be tired out and ready to sleep well at night.
8. Lift Weights While They’re Distracted
If your kids are spending their time watching or playing with something else, you can use the downtime to lift some small weights. It’s easy to lift weights while watching your kids because it doesn’t involve a lot of effort on your brain. That way, you can ensure they’re okay while getting in as many reps as you need.
9. Go for a Walk
Walking can help you lose or maintain weight, lower blood pressure and promote heart health, so it’s a great option for exercise. Plus, it isn’t a very strenuous activity, so the whole family can enjoy a walk after dinner. Even if your little ones aren’t big enough to walk yet, they can join you in a stroller or wagon. That way, you’re adding extra weight to pull or push and transforming your walk into even more of a workout.
10. Go to the Gym at Night
When all else fails, you still have the gym after your little ones have gone to bed. While someone else is watching your children, you can sneak out at night to get half an hour or so in at the gym. While it may not exactly be with your children, you can still build your schedule around them and have a relaxing gym experience where you can work out to your fullest.
Exercise to Stay Happy and Healthy
It’s no surprise that exercise benefits both your physical and mental states. When you’re a parent looking after your kids all day, it can be harder to build a regular workout routine into your schedule. All you need to do is find creative ways to implement movement into your daily life. Whether you’re ensuring you get your 10,000 steps a day by playing with your kids or encouraging your family to complete chores as swiftly as possible, you can rest assured that you’ll get the proper amount of exercise to improve your quality of life.
