Whether you are moving out from your parents’ home, student accommodation such as Urbanest, or you’re just moving house, it is important to be prepared. Careful organisation and forward planning can help to minimise the stress of moving out. This checklist will make sure you’ve got all the basics covered.
Two months to go
Planning ahead two months before you move out will reduce a lot of stress later on. Start by going through every room of your house and deciding what you’d like to keep and get rid of. Decide which items will need special packing or might need extra insurance coverage.
Start researching moving company options. Contact a range of different companies and request an estimate of how much it will cost. Securing a reliable moving company montreal, or elsewhere, as soon as possible can be important, especially for long distance or high traffic periods. Make sure to contact them immediately to check availability and obtain a detailed, written quote.
Six weeks to go
Six weeks before it’s time to start ordering boxes and other supplies such as tape, bubble wrap, permanent makers etc. Start collecting newspaper to wrap your valuables in to keep things more compact. Don’t forget to order wardrobe boxes for your clothes.
Try not to buy in much food apart from your fresh items, and start using things up that you don’t want to take with you such as frozen foods, and cleaning products.
One month to go
Confirm the moving arrangements with your mover and get written confirmation of your moving date, costs and other details. You could start packing things you don’t use as often. Whilst doing so, note items that are breakable which may need additional insurance. Make sure that you clearly label what is in each of your boxes to save time when unpacking and what room the box belongs in.
If you’ve opted to start packing some items now, you’ll need to consider if the boxes are going to be in the way when it comes to moving out the larger items. One strategy that can be effective is to look up storage companies to contact and put some less important items in storage. This can be a great way to create additional space to speed up the bulk of the move and help when it comes to sorting out clutter later on.
Make sure you go to the post office and let them know of your change of address or you can do it online. To be on the safe side, ask the new owners of your new home to forward on any post that may turn up to your new address. Also, you need to inform your bank, employer, magazine subscriptions etc. that you have a new address. To simplify the process, you could also reach out to service providers like Slothmove, which can help notify multiple providers of your new address in one place.
Two weeks to go
If you are moving on a week day, arrange the time off work with your employer so that you can supervise the move. Otherwise you will be spending the day at work, worrying if things are going to plan and you will be able to deal with any problems that may occur if you are at the scene.
A few days before
If you are taking your freezer with you, make sure you defrost it and clean it at least 24 hours before you move out. Make sure you have somewhere to put any frozen foods before you do such as a neighbours, friends or relatives freezer.
Ring the moving company and double check the details such as times so that everyone is prepared and things run smoothly. Make sure you have planned how you are going to pay them.
Moving day
Enjoy your moving day and try not to stress about it. Soon you will be living in your gorgeous new home!

Excellent article! As movers we really recommend to start planning from early because a house move can be very overwhelming. Thank you for the post! Greets, London Removals Ltd.
If you’re asking for help moving items into the truck, have everything already packed and in one room. That way when the people get there, there’s no question of what needs to be done. We were done packing all of our things (heavy couches, beds, and all) in 9 minutes. If you’re not all packed and still in the process, it makes things a lot harder for you and the people volunteering their time.
I am so glad I read this! I know a lot of people just assume they know everything that needs to be done and think they’ll remember. But, especially if your one person moving out of a family home, it’s really easy to forget things. Sure, you take everything in the bedroom, but you’re bound to forget something somewhere else in the house. Always make a sweep through the entire home before even getting started.
Great checklist for moving day and sounds better than the other checklist, appreciated.
