Are you thinking of traveling with your family and little children this summer? Taking a long road trip with young kids may seem intimidating, and you might have questions like: “what if they cry?” and “what if they fight?” Well, we’re here to answer those questions for you. Read below for tips and tricks to help your family road trip be a breeze!

1. Don’t Forget the Baby Products

Products like baby powder are a necessity during a road trip! For example, to treat diaper rash, reduce odor in your car and bags, and even prevent clothes from chaffing. It will also make your little ones that wear diapers much more comfortable and prevent unnecessary tears.

Just be very careful which type and brand of baby powder you decide to use because the dangers of talcum powder are real; this means doing some extra research before choosing the brand you would like to use!

2. Keep All Supplies Organized and Accessible

Before you hit the road, you should ensure that you are very organized and know where to find all the supplies you will need. Some essential supplies that you should keep handy and accessible for the duration of the trip are:

  • Cleaning wipes
  • Diapers
  • Snacks for yourself and little ones
  • Water bottles
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Phone chargers

3. Ensure Your Suitcases are in Top Shape

Before embarking on your journey, it’s just as important to check the condition of your suitcases as it is to organize the supplies inside them. Kids can be unpredictable, and having a sudden suitcase malfunction can add unnecessary stress to your journey. Ensure zippers work smoothly, wheels roll without resistance, and handles are firmly attached. If you notice any issues, consider a suitcase repair or at least a thorough inspection before you travel. Not only does it guarantee the safety of your belongings, but it also gives you peace of mind, knowing you won’t face any luggage-related hiccups during the trip. By investing time in this step, you can make your trip less stressful as a minor luggage problem can turn into a major inconvenience, especially when traveling with kids.

4. Have Plenty of Entertainment Ready

Keeping the kiddos entertained is one of the most challenging parts of taking road trips as a parent with young kids. This is because young kids have very short attention spans and might need something new every hour or so to say content.

Some good options that you can use to keep your kids entertained might include:

  • Movies
  • Portable video games
  • Books
  • Audiobooks
  • Magnetized board games
  • Card games

Be creative too! There are hundreds of games and tools you can use to keep your little ones busy on a long drive.

5. Be Prepared to Resolve Conflicts

Unfortunately, when you travel for hours in a small enclosed space, conflicts are likely to arise, especially when you have kids in the car. After a few hours, kids can get tired of being so close to one another and begin to fight with one another over trivial things. In these cases, you need to handle each situation calmly and effectively. Finding solutions and compromises with kids is very difficult, but with patience and understanding, it can be done.

6. Give The Kids Updates Along the Way

Sometimes it can help your child/children to relax during long trips by giving them updates as to how much longer they can expect to need to sit in one place. For older kids, time estimates in terms of hours or minutes may be good enough. With younger kiddos, though, they might not fully grasp how long one hour is, making them more frustrated.  In this case, for young kids, try giving them timing updates in terms of something they understand, like movies or TV shows. For example, if you’re 3 hours away from your destination, you can tell a 3-year-old that you are about 2 Disney movies away or six TV episodes away. This makes it easier for them to grasp how long the road trip will be – and that understanding makes it easier for them to sit still for the journey.

Final Thoughts

Taking a trip with little children doesn’t have to be a hassle. There are some extra steps you can take before and during the trip to make it go smoother, like staying organized with the items you will need and being prepared to help smooth out conflict.  Above all else, stay calm and be prepared to improvise to keep everything moving smoothly!
