Preparing for a road trip with young kids is no joke. There’s so much to think about that you have to write a list! I have plenty of road trips “under my belt” and today I will share exactly what packing items you need to have when traveling with kids so that the road trip goes as smooth as possible. The items I will share range from necessities that you shouldn’t ever travel without and ends with items that make all travels more fun. Let’s get into it.

My Must-Have Packing Items for Traveling with Kids

#1 Car Seat

Safety comes first, and when traveling with children, a car seat is indispensable. It’s not just for car travel; you’ll often find that you can use a car seat on airplanes. Choosing a car seat that is easy to install and carry can save you a lot of trouble during your journey.

Bringing your own car seat also ensures that it meets your standards for comfort and safety, unlike rentals or borrowed ones. It’s a familiar piece of gear for your child, providing them with security in new environments. Plus, it’s designed to be portable, making it less of a hassle to move from place to place.

#2 Diapers

If you’re traveling with a baby or toddler, diapers are a must. Pack more than you think you’ll need because travel can often lead to unexpected delays. Whether it’s a long-haul flight or a road trip, having a sufficient supply of diapers ensures that your baby remains comfortable and rash-free.

Also, consider where you’re traveling. If it’s a place where buying additional diapers might be expensive or difficult, it’s wise to have extra on hand. Changing facilities might not always be available, so pack a compact, travel-friendly changing pad as well.

#3 Water Bottle

Keeping hydrated is crucial for all, especially little ones. A sturdy, leak-proof water bottle that’s easy for small hands to operate is a valuable item to have in your travel kit. It’s not only environmentally friendly but also economical compared to buying bottled water throughout your trip.

Look for bottles that are durable and have a spill-proof design to prevent accidents in bags or on seats. Refillable bottles can be topped up wherever you have access to safe drinking water, keeping everyone hydrated without the need for constant purchases.

#4 Medications

Don’t forget to pack any regular medications your kids need, along with a basic travel health kit. This kit should include items like fever relievers, antiseptic wipes, and band-aids. Also, consider the potential for motion sickness or allergic reactions when on the move, and pack accordingly.

Having these medications readily available can help you address minor ailments right away, preventing them from worsening. Always check regulations about carrying medications on airplanes and ensure they are easily accessible during your journey.

#5 Comfortable Clothes

Comfort is key during travel. Pack enough comfy clothing for your kids, including extras in case of spills or accidents. For adults, consider bringing cooling pajamas. I like the ones from Cool-Jams because they help you sleep better in warmer climates and ensure you’re rested and ready for the next day’s activities.

Opt for layers that can be easily added or removed depending on the weather. Comfortable, breathable fabrics work best for both kids and adults, making long journeys or waits more bearable.

#6 Stroller

A lightweight, collapsible stroller can be a lifesaver when traveling with young children. It allows you to navigate airports, museums, and city streets with ease. Look for one that folds down quickly and compactly, making it simple to store in car trunks or overhead bins on planes.

A stroller not only gives your child a secure place to sit but also carries some of your bags. This dual functionality makes it indispensable for managing longer walking distances and busy days out exploring.

#7 Extra Underwear

Always pack extra underwear for both kids and adults. Accidents happen, especially with younger children, and having a spare set can prevent discomfort and stress. This simple addition to your luggage ensures that unexpected mishaps don’t disrupt your travel plans too much.

Extra underwear takes up minimal space, so it’s easy to pack several pairs. This small act of preparation can make a big difference in maintaining comfort and hygiene during your travels.

#8 Kids Books

Books are wonderful companions for traveling children. They serve as entertainment during long flights or car rides and can be a soothing bedtime ritual even when away from home. Choose a mix of their favorite books and some new titles to keep their interest.

Interactive or educational books can also be great for keeping kids engaged and learning on the go. They’re an effective way to occupy young minds without resorting to constant screen time.

#9 Sunscreen

No matter your destination, protecting your family’s skin from harmful UV rays is essential. A broad-spectrum sunscreen suited for sensitive skin is a must-have in your travel bag. Apply it liberally on all exposed skin, especially during those sunny outdoor adventures.

Remember to reapply sunscreen regularly, particularly after swimming or sweating. This habit helps prevent sunburns, which can quickly put a damper on your family’s holiday fun.

#10 Snacks

Snacks can be a major mood saver when traveling with kids. Pack a variety of healthy, portable snacks to keep hunger at bay between meals. Options like granola bars, dried fruits, and crackers are easy to carry and generally liked by children.

Having snacks on hand helps you avoid the high prices and limited choices at airports or tourist spots. Plus, they’re a quick way to provide energy boosts during those action-packed days out.
