A collaborative post
Living in a small two bedroom terraced house, space is at a premium with a growing family. Who knew children would accumulate so much stuff? Our two boys are growing up quick and are rapidly outgrowing their current bedroom. So we have a plan. It’s going to be a mammoth task but we plan to make space for the future by swapping bedrooms with them.
Swapping bedrooms
Our master bedroom is the biggest bedroom in the house. It has two windows and looks out onto the front of our road. As it’s a large room we have space for our king size bed and plenty of furniture. We have a bedside table each, there’s three double wardrobes and three chest of drawers. Whilst the room has plenty of storage our clothes, accessories and other random belongings, the space could be better used by the boys.
The boys bedroom is a good size and would definitely have space for our king size bed, bedside tables and a set of wardrobes. We would need to have a huge declutter and both rooms need redecorating but in the long term, I think it would be a great option for us.
The plan of action
Our first step towards the room swap is to declutter. We have a lot of stuff. I have a lot of stuff. We have fifteen years worth of stuff stashed away in the wardrobes. There’s baby accessories from both my boys early years and old work clothes, DVDs and footwear that I’ve not worn in many years. We need a serious declutter and I’m actually looking forward to doing it.
The next step would be to move the furniture, clothing and memories that we intend to keep into storage. There are lots of options for temporary storage, such as Nowstorage, that would give us the space to rip up carpets, replaster walls and redecorate. We have previously hired temporary storage and it was a great space saver for us whilst we did other jobs around the house. The only trouble was finding homes for our belongings once we had got used to having more space again!
With lockdown restrictions easing we’re hoping that our boys will be able to stay over at their Grandparents house and we can crack on with the work without the boys. We all know how ‘helpful’ children are when they’re faced with decluttering toys. We will be doing most of the work ourselves, bar the plastering and laying the carpet, and I cannot wait to make the changes in both the rooms to make more space for the future here.
