Planning a children’s play room // AD

Anyone with children will know that children love to play. They need constant stimulation to keep them entertained and this can come from a variety of toys, games and books. But where do you put them all? If you’ve got the space, having a dedicated room to keep it all in is ideal. Here are my top tips for planning a children’s play room.

Plan the space well

When planning a children’s playroom, it’s really important to consider what space you have available. You will want to make sure you can utilise all the space available to maximise the fun your children will have. Have a think about what storage you’ll be using, whether you want a table in there for arts and crafts plus a seating area to allow your little ones to unwind and watch a film. Don’t forget to leave a space free for children to sit down and play. They will want to stretch out and feel at home whilst building, designing and being creative so give them the space to do so.

Consider the flooring

One of the most important aspects of a playroom is the flooring. Typically, a playroom is going to be a room where children will play with a variety of arts and crafts materials (think play doh, paint and glue, as well as water!) so it’s inevitable you will want a flooring option that is hardwearing and hugely practical. In a room that will house books, toys and games, you will need plenty of storage. Storage allows you to keep some form of organisation in the room and will help open up the space available for playing. Of course, children being children will empty everything onto the floor but if everything has a home to return to, you’re winning at bedtime!

Don’t forget a book nook

Whilst it’s important children have access to all of their toys whenever they want them, it’s really important that children have free access to a variety of books. Books will encourage children to read, to learn, to develop essential skills that all will help build their confidence and aid their development whilst growing up. Having a book nook in your play room will encourage children to help themselves to their favourite book, curl up and get lost in fiction.

Having a well thought out play room can really enhance your children’s development. It will be a safe environment for them to learn in, for them to make as much mess as possible in and one that frees up the rest of your home to be (relatively) toy free!
