Food sensitivity refers to various unwanted reactions our food causes in our body. Some people may feel ill after eating dairy products while others feel bowel irritation if they eat spicy food. But how do you know if you have a sensitivity to food or another issue? Let’s take a look at some common signs and symptoms.

Bloating and stomach ache

Bloating and stomach aches are the first two symptoms of food sensitivity. The belly may feel tight and filled to the brim because it is filled with gas. Some people will belch loudly, while a buildup of intestinal gas will cause stomach aches in others. Food doesn’t get digested properly, and the nutrients do not get broken down properly to fuel the cells.

The waste gets accumulated as gas preventing more intake of healthy food. It may also cause constipation and bowel movement issues. Some people experience severe diarrhea or the need to use the toilet as soon as they finish lunch because the body does not accept the food.

Nausea and vomiting

Nausea is a common symptom of food sensitivity as the body completely rejects the food and prevents processing it. Vomiting may also follow, as the body does not allow it to be processed in the stomach. Consult a doctor and get a food sensitivity test to see whether you are allergic to any ingredient in the food you ate.

Cramping with indigestion and heartburn

Indigestion is a typical sign of food sensitivity, and it manifests itself in various forms, from heartburn to cramps in the stomach. Many people experience heartburn, uncomfortable belches, choking, and a cramping stomach.

Check the ingredients used in the food you consumed before such symptoms and keep a log to track whether any of the ingredients caused similar adverse food reactions before. To recover and reset, try to consume bland food for the next meal and drink plenty of liquids.

Food allergies or food sensitivity?

Food allergies and food sensitivity are not the same thing. An allergic reaction is your immune system’s response to a perceived threat. Food sensitivity is simply your body not agreeing with some component of an ingredient.

Food allergies should be treated by a medical professional immediately. Severe allergies might cause the tongue to swell and close down the digestive tract or our esophagus. The patients will find it hard to breathe and might faint due to a lack of oxygen or air in the lungs. Some allergic reactions cause hives and other visible signs of redness on the skin.
