As the pandemic swept through the UK, more and more of us turned to our digital devices. We all did our weekly food shop online, we helped our children with their virtual online learning and we turned to our phones and tablets for entertainment. Whilst the devices are handy and now an essential part of our everyday lives, did you know that they emit blue light which can be contributing to poor eyesight?
What is blue light and why is it damaging?
Blue light is one of seven colours in the visible light spectrum. These seven colours make up white light that is emitted from the sun and our devices. Each colour in the visible light spectrum has a different wavelength and energy level and blue light has shorter wavelengths and higher energy levels than the other colours.
With increased use, blue light can be damaging to your eyes. It contributes to eye strain with symptoms including dry, irritated or tired eyes and blurred vision. Headaches and Migraines are also a symptom.
How can I prevent damage?
To prevent exposure to blue light, there are a few things you can do to help.
- Wear blue light-blocking glasses
- Turn off your devices overnight
- Take regular breaks away from your devices
Wear blue blue-light blocking glasses
Blue light blocking glasses helps to deflect the blue light emitted from the devices away from your eyes. If you’re a regular computer user or use your devices frequently, this type of glasses is what you need. This is why I choose glasses from Mouqy, an eyewear brand that I discovered recently. They have a range of stylish and functional eyewear for you to choose from. If you’re in need of prescription glasses, use your latest prescription from your Ophthalmologists to ensure your glasses have the best lenses to help your eyesight.

Take a look at their wide collection of stylish glasses at affordable pricing. Not sure what style of glasses suit you the best? Use the virtual try-on features which is a fun experience to try before you buy. There’s a brilliant collection of frames available from round to oval, aviator to rimless, oversized or retro. There is something for everyone’s style and taste.

I decided to try on the Joe Frame which is sturdy yet lightweight. I wear glasses for computer work and for watching the television so need frames that aren’t too heavy on my face. I was really impressed with the Joe Frame and would be happy to purchase these based on the virtual try-on feature.

Each pair of frames gives you a full breakdown of specifications which are great to know. It’s always good to read all the information you could ever want before purchasing something, to avoid disappointment. Once you’ve selected your frames, you can choose your lenses. This is the stage of the purchasing process where you would need your prescription to hand to ensure you get the correct lenses for your eyesight. The buying process is relatively quick and easy to do with plenty of information at each stage to ensure you have all the details about your new pair of glasses. Once checkout is completed, you can relax and wait for the glasses delivered to you in 7-14 days.
Turn off your devices overnight
We all sleep best when we’re undisturbed so there is no need for our devices to be left on emitting harmful blue light. Turn off your devices and leave them out of the bedroom. Overexposure at bedtime can lead to insomnia and can cause restlessness. You’ve worked too hard not to sleep well at night.
Take regular breaks away from your devices.
If you’ve ever experienced dry eyes when you’re working at a computer, it’s likely to be because of your blink rate. This drastically reduces when you’re working on a computer or device and leads to dry eyes. Blinking will help keep your eyes moist and keeps them refreshed. It’s always a good idea to stand up away from your computer or devices and get some fresh air. Fresh air restimulates the brain and can help you concentrate more.
Keep these top tips in mind if you’re experiencing dry eyes or headaches. Blue light blocking glasses are a great way to help your eyesight and keep your eye health in prime condition.
