Britax Römer DUALFIX i-Size Car Seat // Review

At the beginning of the year, Britax Römer launched their latest multi group car seat, the DUALFIX i-Size. With baby Freddie making an appearance around the same time, we were lucky enough to be sent the new car seat to test out and review. We installed the DUALFIX i-Size into my husbands car, a Mokka X, as I couldn’t drive for a couple of months due to my c-section. We have felt really comfortable taking Freddie on car journeys with him in the DUALFIX i-Size, it’s innovative, safe and makes getting Freddie out of the car really easy.

The Britax Römer DUALFIX i-Size car seat can be used from birth up until a child reached 105cm in height (roughly four years old). It’s a fixed swivel car seat on an ISOFIX base that easily attaches to a cars chassis. The car seat itself can be used rear facing and forward facing* (*from approximately 15 months old) but can be left extended rear facing for optimum safety.

The best feature of the car seat is the 360 degree rotation which means you can easily swivel the seat around to face the car door for easy access. Having the baby in front of you when you’re doing up the harness is so much easier than when it’s in a fixed position and you’re side on to the car seat. The DUALFIX i-Size allowed me to put Freddie into the car seat, adjust his harness and ensure he was comfortable before rotating the seat into rear facing mode with an audible click so I know it’s fixed into position.

Features of the DUALFIX i-Size

The DUALFIX i-Size has a number of features which make the car seat a fantastic choice for little ones;

Newborn insert – As we’ve been testing the car seat out with Freddie as a newborn we’ve been using the included newborn insert which has energy-absorbing foam pads that reduces the space inside the car seat and allows babies to lie flatter which looks more comfortable and supportive. This insert can be used until the baby is 60cm in height (and in Freddie’s case, until he’s around 20 weeks old).

Integrated SICT – The DUALFIX i-Size features integrated side impact protection which helps to keep the little one away from the impact whilst absorbing the energy at the same time.

ISOFIX – I love that the DUALFIX i-Size connects to your car integrated ISOFIX. It made the car seat really easy to fit to the chassis of the car and I’m reassured that the car seat is going nowhere once we’re on our journey.

Extended rearward facing – Most parents will know that rearward facing travel is best for our little ones but with the DUALFIX i-Size they can remain rearward facing up until they’re approximately four years old or 18kg. The adjustable head rest allows the seat to grow with the child. However, infants must remain rearward facing until at least fifteen months old.

Multi-recline positioning – I love that the DUALFIX i-Size can be reclined into multiple positions in both forward and rear facing positions. I love to see Freddie lying back as flat as possible as it’s better for his spine, I’m always so conscious about him spending time in the car seat but I’m happy knowing that he’s comfortable and in a safe position for our travels. As Freddie gets older, no doubt will he want to sit more upright and the DUALFIX i-Size will allow him to do that.

5-point harness – I really like the 5-point harness as it really secures Freddie in the seat. Once he’s buckled in it restricts his movement and in the event of an accident, the 5-point harness distributes the forces of an impact across each of the 5 points; two at the shoulders, two at the hips and one at the buckle between his legs.

Adjustable Support Leg – The DUALFIX i-Size car seat has a leg support which gives extra stability against the car floor. This is said to minimise tilting and reduces forward movement in the event of a crash. There’s an easy-to-read indicator which shows when the support leg is firmly in position so you won’t be in any doubt that the seat is fitted incorrectly.

What else we love about the DUALFIX i-Size

We also love that the DUALFIX i-Size has a cover that can be quickly removed. We all know that babies can be sick at any time and even when they’re a bit older, accidents happen so it’s good to know we can pop it in the washing machine at any time.

Good to bear in mind

The Britax Römer DUALFIX i-Size car seat is heavy and bulky. It’s a carseat permanently fixed to an ISOFIX base that allows the seat unit to swivel so it’s definitely not a compact car seat. Therefore this car seat isn’t ideal for switching between cars in my opinion. Once the car seat is in place, it will stay there and you have to physically remove the child from the car seat (the car seat isn’t removable like an infant carrier).

You must also check that the car seat is suitable for your car. The Britax Römer website helps you find out if you’re car is suitable for the carseat and in which position the car seat should be fixed.

We are huge fans of the DUALFIX i-Size car seat. It makes getting Freddie out of the car much easier and the swivel function is so easy to use. I love the multi-positions and best of all, Freddie sleeps really well in his car seat which makes travelling with him much easier.

The rrp of the Britax Römer DUALFIX i-Size is £430. It’s a premium product but has longevity and can be used over a number of years. For ease of use and optimum child safety, it’s a brilliant car seat.

Wow this sounds amazing Emma – there’s so much to love. Extended rear facing was only really starting to become a thing when my youngest was born and the seats were so expensive. I think this sounds like a great investment knowing you can use it for years.
