Recent research conducted by Warburtons, the bread people, has revealed some shocking statistics about our eating habits. According to the research, as a nation we no longer consider breakfast to be the most important meal of the day with many of us eating a cereal bar or a pastry if at all.
The research has revealed that one in five parents eat pastries, chocolate and crisps for their own breakfast and admit to allowing their children to start school each day with a cereal packed full of sugar.
Breakfast in our household is admittedly a bit of a rushed affair. Throughout the working week, both hubby and I take our breakfast to work as we both start work at 8am. As you may have seen on my instagram, I like to eat a healthy breakfast full of fruit and a selection of fibre. Little Mr eats at his Grandparents house and usually has toast, weetabix or porridge.
It’s not always been like this in our house though and for many years, I suffered really badly with stomach problems and didn’t eat anything until at least 10am which affected my metabolism and my very student lifestyle inflicted poor diet.
Warburtons have partnered with the British Heart Foundation to promote the wealth of benefits of eating a healthy balance diet including starting the day with a decent breakfast. The findings of their latest research hope to highlight to families across the UK the importance of family heart health beginning with a tasty healthy breakfast to kickstart the day.
Victoria Taylor, Senior Dietician at the British Heart Foundation comments:
“Breakfast is a great opportunity for people to start the day well. There’s a job to be done in terms of helping parents see the importance of a good breakfast for themselves as well as their children. A nutritious meal doesn’t have to be a time consuming to prepare. Wholemeal toast, porridge or wholegrain cereals, low-fat yoghurt and fruit are all great options that are quick and easy to prepare and can be enjoyed by the whole family.”
Between the 19th January and 20th February, new donation packs of Warburtons wholemeal bread hit the shelves and for every pack sold, 5 pence will be donated to the British Heart Foundation.
This is wonderful news as the charity provide support and advice to families suffering with heart problems such as my own (My Dad suffered a major heart attack last April and subsequently had to have a quadruple bypass, he has gone on to make a full recovery with guidance and support from the charity).
