Children are blessings. As parents, we try so hard to make sure our children are engaged and happy. This might mean days out, family holidays, and quality time with our kids. All of this is very important and can be a wonderful experience for everyone. It’s good for children and parents alike. However, with this in mind, it’s still important to make sure you have time for yourselves. Why does this matter, and how can you find the needed time to yourself?

Maintaining Your Health
As a parent, your child’s health and wellness take priority every time. However, there’s a common principle in first aid that a first aider must look after themselves before they help someone else. This is because, if the first aider loses consciousness or become more injured, they are less able to help anyone else.
How does this apply to parenting? Well, your job is to look after your children. But if you don’t also look after yourself, you might become burned out or otherwise less able to take care of your family. Self care is a responsibility.
This means that you need to think about your physical, mental, emotional, and social health as well as your child. As you might expect, this takes time and sometimes a bit of help.
Babysitting and Support
Friends and family members can be a wonderful support for parents. If they are willing and able to care for your children, you can enjoy a break where you can focus on yourself. Even better, this can be a treat for your kids and the babysitters if they enjoy looking after your children.
While some people do enjoy babysitting, it’s still important to be aware that they are doing you a favour. Give them plenty of notice when you want a babysitter to make sure they’re available, and talk to them about rules and boundaries so your children have consistent care and don’t potentially get confused.
Express your gratitude. You might give them a gift or offer to pay for their time, or you can swap favours. There’s no right or wrong way to do this, as long as you make sure they feel appreciated.
Another option is to hire a babysitter to look after your kids. This has the obvious downside of costing money, but you can find a babysitter who is qualified in so many ways. Look for qualifications in first aid and tutoring. You should also check the experience of the babysitter and meet them in person. Introduce them to your kids.
You can get some fantastic babysitters this way, and your children might enjoy the experience a lot. Also, you feel more secure in the knowledge that your kids are being well looked after.
Date Nights
So you’ve asked someone to babysit your children and you have a free evening, what do you do with it? If you work as a parenting team, you should spend some time alone with your significant other from time to time. Your relationship might look very different from when you first started going out, but it doesn’t mean it doesn’t deserve some attention.

Think about creative date ideas to show you still appreciate each other. While anniversaries and other celebrations are obvious times for dates, it’s good to sprinkle them in through the year. Some people go on a date every week or month, and it helps keep things alive.
While a classic dinner date or a trip to the cinema can be fun, consider mixing things up. A picnic in the summer can be a lovely way to spend time together, or you could try something fun like axe throwing or something else a bit more exciting.
If you are in the North West, there are plenty of fresh spots to try for your next evening out. Many couples find that trying a new cuisine helps break the routine of their usual local spots. For those planning a trip to the city centre, Liverpool’s newest Indian restaurant is a great choice for a relaxed meal. It has a mix of small plates and smoky grills that are perfect for sharing while you catch up. The atmosphere is laid back with good music and art so it feels like a real break from the daily grind. It is a nice way to treat yourselves to something different without a lot of fuss.
The most important thing is that you get time to yourselves as grown ups. You can have serious conversations or not so serious conversations that you don’t want to have around your children. You can be yourselves without focusing on your kids for a couple of hours.
Exercise and Hiking
Another way you can spend time alone is by working out. You can exercise with other people or even as a family activity. This can be a great way to make sure your whole family stays fit and healthy, as you play sports, go hiking, or try cycling.
However, you can also work out by yourself. This helps you work on specific goals like losing weight or building muscle, so you can feel more confident in your own body as well as healthier. Go for walks alone as well as with your family, so you can actually relax and focus on nature.
All of this is great for your physical and mental health. You will also have more energy in your day-to-day life, which is necessary for running around after your kids.
Get a Hobby
Hobbies are such a wonderful part of our lives and make us unique. You can learn skills, make friends, and even earn money with your hobbies. They, like everything else, will take a back step when you have children, but it’s good to still keep them around.
As your children grow older, you can include them in your hobbies as well. Kids want to be like their parents, so use this as a bonding experience when you want to. Or you can use it as a time to be creative or have fun.
Short Breaks
Sometimes your day is so busy that you barely get a moment to yourself. When you do get that moment, grab it. Fix yourself a drink, put your phone away, and try to relax your mind. Some people like puzzles like a crossword, while others prefer to just close their eyes and think for a moment.
You can also doodle or write in your diary if you have one. Or you can flip a few pages in a good book. The important thing is that you aren’t focusing on social media, your kids, your work, or anything else but your own mental health in that moment.
