It’s no secret that teenagers have a lot on their plates. But one of the most important decisions that any teenager ever has to make is choosing their career path. With so many different options out there, it can be overwhelming when it comes to making a decision. If you’re feeling the pressure, here are some ways you can support your teenager to make the right choice for them.

Encourage them to learn some new skills

Although going to school is tiring, there’s no reason that you can’t continue learning at home. Even if learning more times tables isn’t on the cards, there are plenty of skills that you can teach your teenager that will enhance their prospects. They might even have fun at the same time!

What skills can you teach your teenager?

  1. Coding

Did you know that most software engineers start coding from a young age? As well as enhancing career prospects, coding helps young people develop logical thinking and problem-solving skills. As such, getting a BBC micro:bit as a present to get your children involved in technology might be something useful to help them decide if they want to pursue a career in tech.

  1. Learn a language

Did you know that only 9% of people continue to learn a language after they’ve finished school? Although uptake is low, encouraging your teen to learn a language can be hugely beneficial. As well as allowing your child to meet new people and broaden their horizons, it’s widely accepted that employers love candidates who can speak multiple languages! What’s more, once you’ve learned one language, learning more is a doddle!

  1. Team sports

According to the NHS, teenagers should be doing at least 60 minutes of moderate or vigorous exercise each week. If your teen isn’t getting this, then what better way to improve their prospects and fitness than encouraging a sport? It’s thought that team sports are crucial in terms of developing soft skills. For example, team sports can help your teen with communication skills, teamwork, and even leadership. All of which are highly sought-after by employers.

  1. Volunteer

If you want to get your teen out of the house whilst improving their career prospects, what about volunteering? Volunteering (or work experience!) is a great way for teens to decide what they do and don’t like doing. As well as this, they can get real-life exposure to the world of work which can be highly valuable in the future. Although teenagers may not want to think about their future, it’s never been more important to plan ahead. With a potential recession looming, a skills gap widening and employers wanting more, the more that you can do now, the better. So, round up your teen and teach them something new. They’ll thank you for it later!
