What happiness is different for everyone? For some people, it is as simple as reading a good book uninterrupted for a few hours in the day. For others, it is going on exciting tropical adventures.

However, for some people getting happy and staying happy is tough. It is tough to be happy all day, every day – and it is at the top end of the spectrum. But there are some things that you can do that will increase your happiness.

Smile

Yes, really! Smiling is one of the free keys to happiness. The more you smile on purpose, the more likely it is that you will start smiling more regularly – just because. Every time we smile, our brains join in on the effort and release dopamine – which makes us happier still.

But what if you don’t like your smile? Or what if you don’t love your teeth? Your teeth can be straightened, cleaned, and made to look exactly how you want them by a dentist or orthodontists

You don’t need to walk around all day smiling, but working on smiling more and practising yourself in the mirror is a great start. Get into the habit of showing your happiness.

Compliments

Getting compliments is cool – but do you know what is better? Giving them! Giving compliments and seeing the delight on people’s faces has a great impact on making us happy too!

Being kind when we don’t have to be, and there is nothing expected, each way is a delightful way to increase your happiness and make someone else’s day.

Make sure that they are sincere and appropriate, though!

Let go

Do you wake up with your jaw tense? Or perhaps you hold your shoulders stiff. Being tense not only hurts but is a result of stress. When we don’t keep our stress levels in check, they can make us very ill.

One of the best habits to build into your life is to learn how to notice when you are holding yourself tense and breathe it out. Start with your forehead, move down to the jaw, and relax your tongue. Roll your shoulders, and drop them down a little bit. Then shake your arms and focus on your breathing.

Talk Yourself Up

One of the best habits you can get into to increase your happiness is to start talking yourself up. The big talk is great for increasing your confidence. And confidence and happiness go hand in hand. Start to tell yourself you are doing a good job and you are achieving your goals – and generally, be nice to yourself.

Do this daily until it becomes a habit that you do without thinking about it all day, every day.

And remember, when it comes to talking yourself up – that comparison really is the thief of joy. So make sure that you aren’t giving yourself pep talks on things that don’t match your life and goals.
