Working from home isn’t a new phenomenon yet with the pandemic sweeping the country, working from home has become the new normal. According to the Office of National Statistics, in April 2020, 46.6% of employees were working from home. Whilst you might feel comfortable using the makeshift desk in the corner of your living room or sitting at your dining table, here’s four reasons why you need an outside home office in your garden.

Make space for an outside home office

Building a home office in the garden has been quite popular this year. With many households struggling for space, the ideal space to have an office whilst working from home is in the garden, if space allows. Many sheds, cabins and lodges can be converted into work from home office spaces. Many folk have decided to plaster board their sheds, decorate with a lick of paint and install real wood flooring for the ultimate comfort work from home office. Chances are if you design the space yourself, you’ll love working outside and it’ll become your favourite room in your home.

Shut the door on your work

One of the biggest reasons to have a dedicated work space in an outside home office is so you can shut the door on your work at the end of the day. Attempting to create some work life balance when you’re working from home can be difficult. Having access to your work 24/7 or even seeing your work whilst you’re sitting on the sofa can be a huge distraction. Garden offices can be built away from the family home so there is a clear distinction between your family home and your working environment.

Improved concentration

It can be difficult to work in your normal living environment; whether you have family at home during the day or you can’t concentrate with the washing machine on in the background, having a dedicated workspace where it is quiet and distraction free can lead to improved concentration and potentially a more productive work day.

Encourages breaks

Working in a garden home office will mean the commute to work is minimal! Getting outside for a few minutes even to walk the short walk to work can give you the chance to get some fresh air and enjoy the weather. Chances are you won’t have a toilet or a kitchen in your home office so you’ll want to take regular comfort breaks throughout your day, taking in the fresh air outside and stretching your legs to pop inside your home.

We converted our unused outhouse into a home office back in November 2018. It’s something we knew we wanted to do and to this day, we thank our lucky stars that we did it before the pandemic hit.
