As a mum of two energetic boys,, I’m always on the lookout for outdoor adventures that will burn off some of their endless energy while keeping all of us entertained. This year, we’ve decided to make the most of our weekends and summer holidays by exploring more of England’s incredible countryside. We’re ready to lace up the hiking boots and pack the backpack with hike essentials so if you’re looking for hikes that are easy on little legs but still packed with excitement, here are five that are high on our family bucket list!
-
Winnats Pass & Mam Tor, Peak District
Distance: 3 miles (4.8 km)
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Mam Tor, also known as the “Shivering Mountain,” is one of the most iconic spots in the Peak District. The walk up to the summit is short and steep but well worth it for the panoramic views of the rolling hills and dramatic limestone ridges. It looks like the perfect place for kids to run ahead on the well-paved paths, feeling like mini adventurers conquering their first mountain. There’s also the eerie entrance to the collapsed road nearby, which makes for an interesting pit stop. And for an added adventure, we plan to visit nearby Speedwell Cavern or Blue John Cavern to explore underground!
-
Lulworth Cove to Durdle Door, Dorset
Distance: 2 miles (3.2 km)
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
This coastal classic is one we can’t wait to tick off our list! Starting at the perfectly round Lulworth Cove, the trail takes you up a gentle but slightly hilly path before revealing the famous Durdle Door—a natural limestone arch that’s simply stunning. The rock formations and clear waters look fascinating, making it an ideal spot for beachcombing and paddling. The path can be a little steep in places, but the breathtaking views make it worth every step. We’ll definitely be packing a picnic to enjoy while taking in the sea views.

-
Rydal Water & the Coffin Route, Lake District
Distance: 3 miles (4.8 km)
Difficulty: Easy
The Lake District is packed with amazing walks, but Rydal Water is high on our list of must-visit spots. The route is a lovely circular path with a mix of woodland trails, gentle inclines, and stunning lake views. The name “Coffin Route” comes from its history as a path used to carry coffins from Rydal to Grasmere, but don’t worry—it’s said to be more peaceful than spooky! The boys will love spotting waterfalls and skimming stones in the water, and we plan to explore the small cave along the way. A visit to Wordsworth’s former home, Rydal Mount, will add an educational twist to our adventure.
-
Puzzlewood, Forest of Dean
Distance: 1.5 miles (2.4 km)
Difficulty: Easy
Puzzlewood looks like something straight out of a fairytale, and we can’t wait to experience its magical charm! With twisting tree roots, moss-covered rocks, and hidden passageways, it’s easy to see why this ancient woodland inspired J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. It has also been used as a filming location for ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Doctor Who’, which will make our boys even more excited to explore. Unlike a typical hike, this one is all about discovery—wooden bridges, caves, and unexpected surprises around every corner. It’s going to be an adventure playground completely created by nature!

-
Tarn Hows, Lake District
Distance: 1.8 miles (2.9 km)
Difficulty: Easy
For a super relaxed walk with breathtaking scenery, Tarn Hows is high on our list. The circular route is well-paved and stroller-friendly, making it ideal for families with younger children. We’re looking forward to spotting the Highland cows that often graze nearby and exploring the little streams along the way. The peaceful atmosphere makes it the perfect place to slow down, enjoy the view, and let the kids run free. With plenty of benches along the route, it’s an ideal spot for snack breaks and soaking up the beauty of the Lake District.
Final thoughts on family friendly hikes
Exploring the countryside as a family is such a rewarding experience—it gets kids away from screens, burns off energy, and fills their minds with adventure. Whether it’s climbing hills, exploring caves, or wandering through enchanted forests, these hikes are at the top of our bucket list, and we can’t wait to start ticking them off. Do you have any favourite family hikes to recommend?
