To kick off the school holidays (and to make the most of the beautiful weather), we decided to head down to the Cotswolds to take in the beauty at Cotswold Lavender. It’s about an hours drive from our house in the West Midlands so we hopped in the car and drove down to Snowshill, Broadway to take a look around and to take some photographs in amongst the flowers.
Cotswold Lavender is a working farm and distillery where they grow over 40 different varieties of lavender, that’s 140 miles of rows and over 500,000 plants in total. As well as lavender, they grow wildflowers such as the Field Poppy, Corn Cockle and the Cornflower.
At their peak, the lavender fields are harvested and the lavender is distilled using traditional methods and aged for a year before use. This lavender is then sold in a range of holistic products including oils, room fragrances and body products to name just a few.
A small price to pay for such a beautiful sight
We got to the lavender fields late morning and was amazed at how vibrant the fields looked. They looked stunning in the various shades of violet and I couldn’t wait to have a look around. We entered through the gates and paid our entry fees. Adults are priced at £4.00 each with children aged between 5-15 charged at £2 each. Children under 5 get in free of charge.
The fields are stunning. The flowers come into flower mid-June and this year (2019) the best time to see them is early to mid-July. We visited on 22nd July and the flowers were in full bloom. Harvesting of the lavender fields has already begun according to the Cotswold Lavender website and because the fields are reliant on the weather, the fields are only open to the public until 5pm at 4th August 2019.
We spent a good hour and a half walking around the fields. Both the boys loved to explore and see the flowers close up. I didn’t realise how many varieties of lavender there were but Cotswold Lavender have put some signs up to let you know what they are.
