Advertorial Feature

Let’s face it – most of us don’t exactly get excited about the MOT. Between juggling work, school runs, and trying to keep the house vaguely tidy, sorting out the car can feel like one more job you don’t have time for. But it’s not something to ignore, especially when your little ones are in the back seat most days. Get your MOT Test done at Dexel Tyre & Auto Centre and it suddenly becomes a whole lot simpler. That said, there’s still plenty of confusion out there – so let’s tackle a few common myths that catch family drivers out.

  1. “It’s Driving Fine, So It’ll Pass”

Honestly, this is one I’ve heard loads – and even believed myself at one point. But just because your car starts up and gets you from A to B doesn’t mean it’ll sail through the MOT. The test looks at loads of little things that don’t always show themselves while you’re driving – like worn-out wipers, dodgy brake lights or tyres with just a bit too little tread. You might not notice them until the garage points them out. It’s not about being a mechanic – it’s just knowing there’s more going on under the surface than we realise.

  1. “It’s a New Car – It Doesn’t Need an MOT”

This one’s half true. If your car’s fresh off the forecourt, you’re in the clear – but only for the first three years. After that, you’ll need to book in every 12 months without fail. Easy to forget, I know. Life gets busy. But a quick diary reminder or phone alert can save you a proper headache later on. And even if it’s barely been driven, rules are rules – age matters more than mileage when it comes to the MOT.

  1. “It’s Just Expired – I Can Still Drive It”

Ah, the so-called ‘grace period’. Sadly, it doesn’t exist. The minute your MOT expires, that’s it – you can’t legally drive the car unless you’re heading directly to a booked MOT appointment. No sneaky trips to the shops or the school run “just this once”. If you get stopped, you’re looking at a fine and possibly invalid insurance. Bit of a nightmare, really – especially when it’s so easy to avoid by getting in early.

  1. “An MOT Covers Everything, Right?”

Nope. And this one trips loads of people up. An MOT checks the safety and roadworthiness of your car – things like lights, brakes, tyres, emissions and so on. But it doesn’t cover stuff like your engine oil, filter changes or whether your car’s due a service. Those are separate. If you want your car properly looked over, especially if it’s doing the miles with the family onboard, a full service alongside your MOT is a smart move. Bit of peace of mind, too.

  1. “It’s a Nightmare to Book – Always a Hassle”

Maybe it used to be, but not anymore. Loads of centres now have online booking, reminders, early drop-offs – even comfy waiting rooms if you’ve got the kids in tow. Some let you book an MOT and service together, which saves time and faff. Honestly, it’s not the stress-fest it once was. Dexel Tyre & Auto Centre is a good example – proper straightforward, no fuss, and they get you sorted quickly without messing you about.

So there you go – five MOT myths, busted. It doesn’t have to be a drama. And once it’s done, you can tick it off your list and get back to everything else life throws at you – like hunting for lost school shoes or remembering what day PE kit is due in.
