A family car is an extremely important investment. Your choice of vehicle will make a big difference to your quality of life with your family. Whether you’re dropping the kids off at school, popping down to the supermarket, or going on a long road trip, the right car can make the experience that much more convenient and enjoyable. So, what features should we be looking for in a family car?

Safety Features and Ratings
Perhaps the most important features in a modern family car involve safety. After all, few of us want to compromise when it comes to the safety of our nearest and dearest. Extra features like blind spot detection and rearview cameras might allow us to avoid a collision, while passive design choices, like crumple zones, will reduce the impact of that collision.
For an idea of how safe a given vehicle is, you might look at Euro NCAP, which is an independent body that tests vehicles and ensures that they are safe. In the highly competitive family car market, it’s not uncommon for a vehicle to achieve a perfect score.
Space and Comfort
A family car should be spacious enough to accommodate several children, along with any family pets you might have. It should be able to do this without compromising on comfort. This is particularly useful if you’re going on a very long drive with everyone crammed against one another. It’s largely for this reason that larger vehicles have become so popular with suburban families.
Fuel Efficiency and Environmental Impact
The more fuel your vehicle consumes, the more you’ll need to spend on filling it up. On top of this, more fuel consumption correlates with higher carbon emissions. Generally speaking, there’s a tradeoff between the size of a vehicle and its fuel efficiency – though if you’re willing to invest in an electric car, you could drive down your overall emissions and costs substantially.
Reliability and Maintenance Costs
The reliability of the vehicle will also have a big impact on the amount you spend on keeping it on the road. For this reason, it’s a good idea to look at consumer surveys. The more popular the vehicle, generally speaking, the more reliable these surveys are – since a larger number of owners can flag problems more effectively. In some cases, you can get a reliable vehicle on the second-hand market. You don’t have to look far to find a used BMW 3 series for sale.
Budget and Modern Conveniences
Finally, it’s a good idea to set your budget before you start shopping. That way, you won’t be tempted to spend beyond your means. In some cases, there may be modern conveniences, like parking assistance, which justify a greater outlay.
